Huskies host Bulldogs Thursday; Lakers Saturday for Play4Kay and Senior Day

HOUGHTON, Mich. – For the final time in the regular season, the Michigan women's basketball team is at the SDC Gymnasium for a full weekend of games. The Huskies will welcome Ferris State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before Play4Kay Day and Senior Day Saturday against Lake Superior State, slated for a noon tipoff. 

The Huskies will take part in the GLIAC's Play4Kay initiative on Saturday to help raise awareness and support for all cancers affecting women, Michigan Tech Athletics encourages fans to wear pink with a donation link available here.

About the Bulldogs

Ferris State is fresh off a three-game week where the Bulldogs went 1-2, falling to Roosevelt on Monday (83-73) and No. 1 nationally-ranked Grand Valley State (78-57) on Saturday, earning a win over Davenport in Grand Rapids on Thursday (87-50). 

For the season, FSU is 16-7 overall and 10-4 in the loop while residing in a tie with Northern Michigan for second place in the conference standings. 

As a team, the Bulldogs rank top-25 in the country in three-point percentage (34.9), turnover margin (5.87), steals per game (12.8), scoring offense (77.6), free-throw percentage (79.8), assists per game (18.3) and assist to turnover ratio (1.27). 

Mia Riley paces the offense with 14.3 points per game while defensively accruing a team-leading three steals per outing. Emma Schierbeek (43), Ellie Irwin (36) and Riley (35) are among the top 11 3-point scorers in the league.

Mya Hiram has the second-best field goal percentage in the league (47.6), adding 12.6 points a game.

Kenzie Bowers is the teams leading-rebounder with 139 boards this season, averaging six per game.

About the Lakers

Lake Superior State enters the final weeks of the regular season with an overall record of 5-17 while going 2-12 in conference play. The Lakers are on a nine-game losing skid under first-year head coach Grace Howrigon, with the GLIAC victories coming against Roosevelt (54-52) and Davenport (60-58).

Junior forward Grace Bradford ranks first in the GLIAC in double-doubles (10), rebounds (202), defensive rebounds per game (6.9) and rebounds per game (9.2). She also ranks second in the league in points (329), points per game (15) and field goal attempts (279). 

Breah Golden joins Bradford in double-digit scoring with 12.1 points per outing and a team-leading 1.73 3-pointers per game.

The Lakers rank sixth in the GLIAC shooting 70.8 percent from the free-throw line, where they earn 8.2 of their 53.7 points per game.

About the Huskies 

Michigan Tech will look to turn the corner on a winless road trip last weekend following losses to Wayne State (66-44) on Thursday and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (56-49). The Huskies are 9-13 overall and 6-8 in the GLIAC, residing seventh in the conference standings.

Michigan Tech ranks second in the league in free-throw percentage (75.4%) and third in defensive rebounds (28.5). Individually, veteran guard Isabella Lenz paces the GLIAC with 33.99 minutes played per game and second with a free-throw percentage of 86.2 percent, while freshman standout Kendall Standfest resides second in the league with 6.4 defensive rebounds per game.

Lenz has scored a team-high 305 points this season for an average of 13.9 points per outing. She is joined by Standfest (11.4) and graduate transfer Janie Tormanen (10.8) in double-figure scoring.

Sophomore guard Dani Nuest ranks 11th in the league with a team-leading 2.8 assists per game. Standfest leads the Huskies with 7.4 boards a game, which ranks fifth in the GLIAC.
