PREVIEW: Huskies open 59th GLI against Miami

Michigan State and Ferris State play in the second semifinal.

59TH GLI
• Michigan Tech is hosting the 59th annual Great Lakes Invitational at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on Dec. 28-29.
• The Huskies open against Miami in the first semifinal at 3:37 p.m. on Sunday.
• No. 3 Michigan State and Ferris State will play in the second semifinal at 7:07 p.m.
• The GLI Championship will be at 7:07 p.m. on Monday.
• The GLI Third Place game starts at 3:37 p.m. on the second day.
 
GLI HISTORY
• The Great Lakes Invitational was first played in 1965 after the idea for the tournament was conceived and implemented by Michigan Tech coach John MacInnes, Olympia Stadium General Manager Lincoln Cavalieri, and Detroit Red Wings Scout Jack Paterson.
• The tournament has been played at Olympia Stadium (1965-78), Joe Louis Arena (1979–2012, 2014–16), Comerica Park (2013), and Little Caesars Arena (2018-19). COVID-19 canceled the 2020 GLI and teams played a non-tournament showcase-style event in 2021. The 2022 edition was the first at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.
• Michigan Tech has won the GLI 12 times in 58 tournaments.
• Michigan State has 13 GLI titles in 50 tournaments and is the defending winner of the MacInnes Cup.
• Ferris State is in the tournament for the fifth time.
• Miami is making its debut in 2025.
 
TICKETS
• Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com and at the Van Andel Arena, DeVos Place, and DeVos Performance Hall Box Office.
• Pricing is based on a per-day basis and tickets will be distributed on a mobile device. On-glass tickets are $75, with lower bowl sections for $50 and $40, and student tickets at $15.50. Upper-level tickets are $30. Ticket pricing is subject to change and additional fees may apply.
• Michigan Tech's alumni section is 124 and the student sections are 224 and 225.

• All Michigan Tech home and CCHA games during the 2025-26 season will be live-streamed on Midco Sports Plus 2.

TECH GLI NOTES
• Tech has a 51-62-3 all-time GLI record.
• Tech has 12 titles with the most recent in 2023, 2019 and 2012.
• The Huskies have finished second 17 times, third 13 times, and fourth 16 times.
• Tech has played in the GLI Championship Game in eight of the last 11 tournaments.
 
LAST GLI MEETING
• Miami – First meeting at the GLI.
• Michigan State – Tech and MSU tied 3-3 in the 2023 GLI Championship Game. The Huskies won the shootout 1-0 to capture the MacInnes Cup. Jack Works had a hat trick in the game and was named GLI MVP. Ryland Mosley was the only player to score in the shootout
• Ferris State – Tech defeated FSU 4-2 in the 2014 GLI Third Place Game. It is the only GLI meeting between the two teams. CJ Eick, Malcolm Gould, Joel L'Esperance, and Tanner Kero scored for the Huskies. Jamie Phillips stopped 34 shots.
 
SERIES INFO
• Miami – Tech is 3-3 all-time against Miami. The teams have never played a neutral site game and the last meeting was Jan. 14, 1984 in Ohio. The Huskies won 7-4.
• MSU – The Huskies are 86-75-5 all-time against the Spartans and 9-23-2 against MSU at the GLI. Tech is undefeated in 11 of the last 32 meetings. Tech is unbeaten in six straight GLI games against the Spartans. Tech is 1-5-1 against MSU in the GLI title game with the lone victory in 1971.
• FSU – The Huskies are 37-19-3 all-time against the Bulldogs, dating back to 1982. Tech has won four straight and are undefeated in 10 of the last 12 games. The Huskies are 1-1 against the Bulldogs in neutral site games with a 2014 GLI Third Place win and a 2016 WCHA Championship loss at Van Andel Arena.

LAST TIME OUT
• Michigan Tech swept Ferris State for the second time this season on Dec. 12-13.
• The Huskies won 3-2 on Friday, coming back from a one-goal deficit in the third period. Tech completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory on Saturday.
• Stiven Sardarian scored in both games while Max Koskipirtti and Elias Jansson also scored Friday. Matthew Van Blaricom and Carson Birnie scored their first NCAA goals on Saturday with Noah Reinhart and Brayden Boehm also scoring.
 
CCHA GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
• Owen Bartoszkiewicz stopped 48-of-52 shots in the CCHA series sweep at Ferris State. The junior made 22 saves on Friday in a 3-2 win and 26 saves on Saturday in a 5-2 victory. The Huskies went 4-for-4 on the penalty kill in the series.
• It's the third time this season he earned the honor.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
• Tech travels West for the Desert Hockey Classic hosted by Arizona State on Jan. 2-3 at Mullett Arena.
• The Huskies play Air Force in the early semifinal with Alaska Anchorage and ASU playing the late semifinal.
• Tech returns to CCHA action on Jan. 9-10, traveling to Bemidji State for the second meeting with the Beavers of the regular season.
• The Huskies host No. 14 Minnesota State on Jan. 16-17 at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
 
STATISTICAL NOTES
• Stiven Sardarian is second nationally in assists (18) and sixth in points (26).
• Owen Bartoszkiewicz is fifth nationally with 10 wins and eigth in minutes played.
• Max Koskipirtti is ranked 15th in the nation in faceoff wins (191).
• Tech ranks second in the CCHA in penalty kill, faceoff winning percentage, and fewest penalty minutes per game.
• Tech is 5-1-1 when leading after the first period and 4-0-2 when scoring the first goal of the third period.
• Stiven Sardarian, Jack Anderson, and Joe Prouty have all hit the 100-game plateau in their NCAA careers this season.
 
COLLEGE HOCKEY INC NOTES
• Bill Muckalt is one of 11 new coaches across the country for the 2025-26 season.
• Michigan Tech is tied for the largest freshman class in the nation (12).
• 24 percent of Finlanders in college hockey are on Michigan Tech's roster (6-of-25).
• Seven of the 76 players in college hockey who played in the WHL are on Michigan Tech's roster.
• Coach Muckalt is one of six NCAA head coaches with NHL playing experience.
 
COACH MUCKALT
• Bill Muckalt was named the 23rd head coach at Michigan Tech on May 22, 2025.
• Muckalt returned to Houghton after one season as head coach of Lindenwood.
• Muckalt was an assistant coach at Tech for four seasons from 2011-15.
• Muckalt played 256 NHL games over five seasons with Vancouver, New York Islanders, Ottawa, and Minnesota. He scored 97 career points with 40 goals and 57 assists.
• He won two National Championships as a player at Michigan in 1996 and 1998 and was an All-American in 1998.
 
SPORTSCENTER TOP 10
• Carson Latimer's second-period goal at Northern Michigan on Nov. 8 checked in at number five on ESPN's top 10 plays of the night.
• It was also highlighted as No. 1 in the CCHA top plays of the week.
 
NON-CONFERENCE
• The Huskies have 10 non-conference games scheduled for the season.
• Tech split at No. 8 Minnesota on Oct. 3-4.
• The Huskies also split at Alaska on Oct. 17-18.
• Tech travels fell 6-4 at Clarkson on Oct. 31.
• The trip to New York wrapped up with a 3-0 shutout at St. Lawrence on Nov. 1.
• Tech opens the GLI against Miami with Michigan State and Ferris State playing in the second semifinal.
• Non-conference play wraps up at the Desert Hockey Class against Air Force in the semifinal and Alaska Anchorage or host Arizona State on the second day.
 
CCHA FORWARD OF THE MONTH
• Stiven Sardarian has been named the CCHA Forward of the Month after he scored six goals and added seven assists in nine games in November, accumulating at least one point in eight of the nine contests.
• His 13 points ranked third in the NCAA. Sardarian had two goals and one assist against Northern Michigan (Nov. 7) and St. Thomas (Nov. 28).
 
CCHA ROOKIE OF THE MONTH
• Teydon Trembecky was named the CCHA Rookie of the Month for October after he scored five goals and added five assists in his first month of college hockey. He had three power-play goals, 23 shots on goal, and seven blocked shots.

• Junior Isaac Gordon is the captain of the 2025-26 Huskies.

PRESEASON ALL-CCHA
• Senior forward Stiven Sardarian was named to both the coaches' and media's Preseason All-CCHA Team.
• Junior forward Isaac Gordon was named to the coaches' Preseason All-CCHA Team.
 
ASSISTANT COACHES
• Benton Maass begins his first season as an Assistant Coach. Maass comes to Houghton after one season as an Assistant Coach at Lindenwood. As a defenseman, he played collegiately at New Hampshire and Minnesota State and appeared in 122 professional games in the AHL and ECHL.
• L.J. Scarpace begins his first season as an Assistant Coach. Scarpace comes to Houghton after serving as a video coach in the NHL since 2017. He most recently worked with Detroit for the past six seasons. As a goaltender, he played collegiately at Western Michigan and Michigan.
• Former Michigan Tech hockey player Tyler Shelast begins his fifth season as an assistant coach. Before being named an assistant coach, Shelast spent the previous eight seasons as the strength and conditioning coach for the Huskies.
 
PRESEASON CCHA COACHES POLL
• Tech was picked in a tie for third in the Preseason CCHA Coaches' Poll with Augustana. The Huskies earned a pair of first-place votes.
• St. Thomas and Minnesota State were the top two choices, with Bowling Green, Bemidji State, Lake Superior State, Ferris State, and Northern Michigan rounding out the poll.
 
PRESEASON CCHA MEDIA POLL
• Tech was picked fourth in the Preseason CCHA Media Poll behind Minnesota State, St. Thomas, and Bowling Green.
• Augustana, Bemidji State, Ferris State, Lake Superior State, and Northern Michigan rounded out the poll.

NHL DRAFT PICKS
• Carson Latimer was selected by Ottawa in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Draft with the 123rd pick. He is now a free agent.
• Kalem Parker was selected by Minnesota in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft with the 181st pick. He is now a free agent.
• Stiven Sardarian was selected by Buffalo in the third round of the 2021 NHL Draft with the 88th pick. He is now a free agent.
 
TRANSFERS
• Jack Anderson played three seasons and 90 games at Lindenwood (2022-25). He tallied 25 points with the Lions on four goals and 21 assists.
• Owen Baker played seven games in one season at Michigan State (2023-24). He notched two points with a goal and an assist.
• Owen Bartoszkiewicz played at Lindenwood in 2024-25, with a .919 save percentage and 2.57 goals-against average in 29 games. He played six games for Minnesota during the 2022-23 season with a 3.72 goals-against average and .883 save percentage.
• Joe Prouty played three seasons and 90 games at Lindenwood (2022-25). He tallied 21 points with the Lions with three goals and 18 assists.
• Stiven Sardarian played the two seasons for New Hampshire (2022-24). In 61 NCAA games for the Wildcats, he tallied nine goals and 12 assists
