Huskies travel to the Bullion State for contest at UMSL

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Following a 2-0 start to GLIAC play last week, the Michigan Tech women's basketball team returns to the non-conference slate, traveling to Missouri St. Louis on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.

About the Tritons

Missouri-St. Louis has enjoyed a 7-1 start to the regular season, while playing to an undefeated standing in the GLVC (4-0). The Tritons have common opponents with the Huskies, with wins over Lewis (64-62) and Roosevelt (54-52) while falling to Parkside (82-73).

Since the loss to the Rangers on Nov. 15, the Tritons have rattled off six-straight wins, most recently besting Maryville (61-53) on Tuesday.

UMSL paces the GLVC in fouls per game (12.6), free throw percentage, rebound margin (9.9) (79.1), scoring defense (51.6) and scoring margin (13.8).

For the season, the Tritons are producing 65.4 points on 43.8 percent shooting while pulling down 38 rebounds per game. Mara Rieder nears 20 points per game (19.9) to lead the team with a season-high 28 points–amassing four double-doubles and a team-high 12 blocks in seven games.

Freshman Jayden Kuper adds 14.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, a team-leading 2.6 steals and 2.3 assists per game. Morgan Ramthun rounds out the double-figure scorers with 10.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Anna Costa Riera ranks 19th in the country with 40 assists (5 per game).

The Tritons were predicted to finish fourth in the GLVC preseason poll under the guidance of Katie Vaughn in her 14th season at the helm of Missouri-St. Louis.

About the Huskies

Michigan Tech is off to its best start since the 2022-23 season with a 6-2 overall ledger and a 2-0 start to league play. The Huskies enjoyed a 2-0 start to GLIAC play with road wins at Roosevelt (64-48) and Parkside (65-60).

Head coach Sam Clayton earned her first road win against the Rangers on Saturday, as sophomore standout Kendall Standfest earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors after averaging 11.5 points, 19 rebounds, 12 on defense, two blocks and two steals.

Standfest recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds at Roosevelt, the seventh of her career.

For the weekend, Ella Mason and Standfest led the team in scoring with 15.5 points and 11.5 points per game, respectively. Standfest averaged 9.5 rebounds as Soraya Timms averaged 11 points while posting back-to-back career-highs of eight assists.

The Huskies own a 3.3 rebounding margin over the opposition and are 5-0 on the year when winning the rebounding battle. Standfest (6.6), Alyssa Wypych (5.4) and Janie Tormanen (5.1) are averaging over five boards per game.

One Last Thing

Saturday's game will be a family reunion of sorts as freshman Bella Hanna's sister, Lexi Hanna, plays for the Tritons, leading the team with 12 3-pointers and averaging 5.6 points in 27 minutes a game.
