Huskies travel to Minnesota for pair of games

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Fresh off its first home weekend sweep of the season, the 4-0 Michigan Tech women's basketball team travels to Minnesota for two more non-conference contests against NSIC foes, playing at No. 17 Concordia-St. Paul on Friday (4:00 p.m.) before taking on Winona State on Saturday (3:00 p.m.)

About the Golden Bears

No. 17 Concordia-St. Paul welcomes the Huskies following its second loss of the season, dropping a 77-75 contest to Winona State in overtime on Tuesday. The Golden Bears are 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC.

Standout guard Lydia Haack and forward Lauren Wilson are the top-returners from the CSP squad that made the Central Region tournament a season ago. The duo combine for 42 of the teams 78.8 points per game as Wilson produces a double-double of 23.4 points and 11.6 rebounds while Haack adds 19 points, 7.4 assists, 6.2 rebounds and 3.4 steals.

Leah Dengerud also adds 12.0 points and 3.0 rebounds into the mix.

The Golden Bears find success from beyond the arc with 31 three-point attempts per game and 10 three-pointers made per game, both rank in the top 10 nationally. CSP also takes care of the ball, with an NSIC-leading 13.2 turnovers per game, ranking 18th in the country.

Wilson has three double-doubles so far this season, which is eighth-best in the nation, as Haack's 7.4 assists is third in the country.

The Golden Bears were selected to finish second in the NSIC South under the guidance of Amanda Johnson in her 11th season at the helm.

About the Warriors

Winona State has played to a .500 record following its first-ranked win of the season, besting No. 17 Concordia-St. Paul 77-75 in overtime on Tuesday for a 3-3 overall standing and a 1-0 ledger in the loop.

The Warriors are led by Hailey Markworth (13.3) and Sadie Jarmolowicz (10.3) in scoring, as the duo adds two assists and over a steal per game. Markworth posted a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds in the ranked win over the Golden Bears.

Markworth leads the team with 6.8 rebounds, as Megan Schuman adds 5.7 and Jarmolowicz produces 4.7.

As a team, the Warriors are outrebounding the opposition by 7.7 boards, averaging 39.5 per game.

Ana Wurtz is in her fourth season at the helm of the Warriors, who were selected to finish 12th in the NSIC.

About the Huskies

Michigan Tech is off to its best start since the 2021-22 season, traveling to Minnesota with a 4-0 ledger. The Huskies showed out in front of their home crowd last weekend with two non-conference wins over NSIC affiliates Minnesota Duluth (79-69, OT) on Friday before fending off St. Cloud State 69-66 Saturday.

The weekend was a showcase of sorts by sophomore guard and Negaunee, Michigan, native Ella Mason, who recorded back-to-back career-highs in points to lead the Black & Gold. Mason scored 22 points against the Bulldogs before putting on a 3-point shooting clinic against SCSU–finishing with 24 points while going six-for-12 from 3-point land. For the weekend, she shot 52.9 percent (18-34) and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc (8-18) to go with seven rebounds and two assists in over 33 minutes a game.

Junior guard Alyssa Wypych also had a 20-point outing, scoring 20 points while going 10-for-12 from the free throw line in Friday night's win. In total, four Huskies reached double-figure scoring in both games, with Soraya Timms combining for 25 points over the weekend as Janie Tormanen recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards in the win over SCSU.

For the season, Wypych paces the Huskies in scoring with 13.3 points, joined by Mason (13), Timms (11.0) and Tormanen (10.8) in double-figure scoring. Three players are averaging over six boards per game, led by Kendall Standfest with seven rebounds per game to go with 8.3 points. Tormanen and Wypych bring down 6.3 and 6.0 boards per game, respectively.

One Last Thing

The Huskies have played Concordia-St. Paul and Winona State have met a combined five times, dating back to the 2022-23 season, playing to a 2-3 record with one win over each team.
