Huskies wrap first half of GLIAC play Sunday at Northern Michigan

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team has a one-game weekend ahead of them to conclude the first half of GLIAC play, traveling across US 41 for a 3:00 p.m. tilt at Northern Michigan Sunday.

The Series

The two UP rivals have faced each other 28 times, with Michigan Tech holding a 9-15-4 record against Northern Michigan. The Huskies are 1-2-7 in the last 10 meetings with the last draw coming at Kearly Stadium in a 1-1 decision on Oct. 6, 2023.

About the Wildcats

Northern Michigan has posted a 3-3-4 record, most recently earning a 2-1 win over Ferris State on Friday, before playing to a 3-3 draw against Saginaw Valley State Sunday. The Wildcats are 2-1-2 in their last five games and are fourth in the league.

Offensively, Northern Michigan averages 1.50 goals per game on 12.4 shots. Forward Hannah Kastamo has a team-leading 10 points with a team-high four goals and two assists, which includes two game-winning goals.

Irene Kiilunen (3) and Madison Bilbia (2) have also recorded multiple goals for the Wildcats as Addison Frantti and Gretchen Ellis account for a team-high three assists.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Carly Sides has played to a 2-2-1 record, averaging 6.4 saves per game to lead the league with a .762 save percentage.

NMU ranks third in the league in corner kicks (4.6) and first in fouls per game (8.3).

The Wildcats, predicted to finish fourth in the league, are under the guidance of first-year head coach Erin Egolf.

About the Huskies

Michigan Tech travels to Marquette with an overall standing of 1-8-1 and 1-4-1 in the GLIAC. The Huskies are looking to turn the corner on a four-game losing skid following two narrow losses at Kearly Stadium against Saginaw Valley State (2-1) Friday and Ferris State (2-1) Sunday. The Black & Gold currently reside seventh in the GLIAC standings.

Despite the results, the offense saw a career-high two goals by junior midfielder Reilly Lovercheck and two assists from freshman Peyton Wetzel. Wetzel now leads the team in points (8), goals (3) and assists (2). Allison Millina has accounted for a game-winning goal and an assist as Kenzie Dollison and Bella Vasoli have each scored a goal this season.

The Huskies recorded a season-high six corner kicks against the Cardinals, as the Black & Gold average 3.1 corner kicks and 7.6 shots per game.

Senior goalkeeper Bri Barrows holds a 1-7-1 record, averaging 5.78 saves per game with a save percentage of .776 and a GLIAC-leading 52 saves, which also ranks 16th in the country.
