Koskinen nets first career goal as Huskies fall to Lakers Sunday

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Freshman midfielder Karli Koskinen scored her first career goal, however the Michigan Tech soccer team fell 6-1 to No. 5 nationally ranked Grand Valley State at the GVSU Soccer Field on Sunday.

Michigan Tech (2-12-1, 2-8-1 GLIAC) allowed four first half goals including a penalty kick and two additional goals in the second half. Grand Valley State (12-2-0, 9-1-0 GLIAC) fired 39 shots on the day, landing 18 on goal to go with nine corner kicks.

"Credit to GVSU for coming out ready to play and putting it to us from the start. We again made a handful of mistakes that killed our chances of staying in the game," said Michigan Tech head coach Melissa Kuhar. "We have to be able to control the controllables, and today we failed at doing so. We look to move on and have 3 very important games coming up at home where we have to get results to extend our season."

Sonia Mehta netted the first and last goal for the Lakers striking in the 12th minute and the 54th minute. GVSU had two more run of play goals in the first half before a converted penalty kick by Acadia Murphy to make it a 4-0 game heading into halftime.

The two teams traded early goals with Alli French netting a GVSU goal in the 49th minute before Koskinen struck off her left foot to the top right corner of the net as Lizzy Striebel was credited with the assist in the 50th minute.

Ludesha Reynolds recorded her second start of the season in goal for the Huskies, both times coming against the Lakers making five saves before Bri Barrows played the second half making seven stops. GVSU produced 22 shots in the first half and 17 in the second.

The Huskies tallied three shots with Koskinen's goal being the lone SOG.
