HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's basketball team is set to host Saginaw Valley State (Thursday 5:30 p.m.) and Wayne State (Saturday Noon) this weekend at the SDC Gymnasium.Â

About the Cardinals
Saginaw Valley State sits at 8-6 overall and 2-4 in the GLIAC. In 2025 the Cardinals are 2-2 in the GLIAC with wins over Lake Superior State (67-53) and Purdue Northwest (80-56) while falling to then-No. 24 nationally-ranked Ferris State (70-56) and most recently dropped a contest to Parkside (72-60) on Saturday.
SVSU ranks third in the GLIAC in scoring defense (60.6 points per game), steals per game (11.7) and turnovers forced per game (21.29). Offensively, the Cardinals pour in 61.6 points per game while shooting 41.8 percent from the field, as sophomore forward Megan McCalla (17.4) and senior guard Aleshia Jones (14.9) are the top two scorers.Â
McCalla is the league's leading scorer with 244 points scored this season, with Jones also crossing the 200-point milestone in the 2024-25 campaign.Â
Junior guard Lydia Meredith (37) and senior guard Saniaa Walker (33) rank among the top stealers in the league, averaging more than two steals an outing. Meredith has earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for Week Seven. First-year center Ava Locklear is second in the GLIAC with 1.36 blocks per game and 19 blocks on the season.
The Cardinals were tabbed to finish seventh in the GLIAC under six-year head coach Jenny Pruett.
About the Warriors
Wayne State travels to the U.P. with an overall ledger of 8-6 and a 3-3 record in league play. The Warriors are 2-2 in the GLIAC to start the new year with wins over Lake Superior State (75-48) and most recently downed Purdue Northwest (98-54) on Saturday.
The Warriors share the ball well with 16.4 assists per game and also get 14.36 points from the charity stripe, averaging 19.1 free-throw attempts per outing, totaling 69.2 points per game.
Shea Tripp and Taylor Thompson combined to be a lethal two-headed monster for the Warriors as they both have recorded six double-doubles this season. The duo averages over 12 points a game, with Thompson adding a team-leading 9.4 rebounds with Tripp adding 7.6. Tripp also leads the team in assists (3.9) and steals (2.6) per game.Â
Gabi Lutchka leads the Cardinals with 15 blocks (1.07 blocks per game) and 25 3-pointers (1.79 3-pointers per game).Â
The Warriors were predicted to finish sixth in the league as Carrie Lohr returns for her 14th season at the helm.Â
About the Huskies
Michigan Tech is looking to turn the corner on a two-game losing skid, most recently falling short at Northern Michigan (68-64) and before falling to first-year GLIAC affiliate Roosevelt (74-57) on Saturday. The Huskies are 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the loop.
Veteran guard Isabella Lenz continues to lead the way for the Black & Gold in minutes per game (34.72), points per game (15.5), field goal percentage (41.4) and blocks per game (1.07). She has scored in double-figures in all 14 games this season and 64 times in her career.
As a team, the Huskies rank first in the GLIAC and 14th in the country in free throw percentage (78.3) while also having a top-three defensive rebounding team in the league, grabbing 27.9 defensive boards per outing.Â
The Black & Gold take care of the ball well, with 14.2 turnovers per game, ranking second in the GLIAC and 36th nationally.Â
First-year guard Kendall Standfest joins Lenz in double-figure scoring, averaging 10.9 points and a team-leading 7.4 rebounds a game—which ranks fourth in the GLIAC. Her 6.3 defensive rebounds a game ranks second in the GLIAC.
