PREVIEW: Volleyball season begins in Colorado

WEEKEND MATCHES
• Michigan Tech begins the 2024 season this weekend with four matches in Golden, Colorado at the Classic at Mines hosted by Colorado School of Mines.
• The Huskies begin the campaign against No. 13 Regis at 1 p.m. Eastern on Friday. The day wraps up against Gannon at 6 p.m.
• Tech plays No. 17 Colorado Mesa at 2 p.m. Saturday and closes out the weekend against host Colorado Mines at 7 p.m.

• All Oredigger Classic matches will be streamed live and for free on the RMAC Network at www.minesathletics.com/tv.

PRESEASON GLIAC POLL
• In the 2024 Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Huskies were picked third in the GLIAC behind Ferris State and Grand Valley State which both received first-place votes.
• The Bulldogs had 97 points, including seven first-place votes. The Lakers were a close second with 94 points and four first-place nominations. The Huskies had 79 points followed by Parkside (71), Northern Michigan (67), Wayne State (48), Davenport (46), and Purdue Northwest (44) in the top eight. Lake Superior State (27), Saginaw Valley State (18), and Roosevelt (14) rounded out the poll.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
• Regis University is located in Denver. The Rangers are ranked No. 13 in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Preseason Division II Poll. Regis went 23-7 last season and won the RMAC Tournament. The Rangers were picked third in the preseason RMAC poll. AVCA Honorable Mention All-American middle blocker Amelia Davis leads nine returners for the Rangers.
• Gannon University is in Erie, Pennsylvania, and competed in the GLIAC from 1995-2008. The Golden Knights have won back-to-back PSAC Tournament championships and were selected as PSAC West favorite in the coaches' preseason poll. The Golden Knights welcome back four players who earned AVCA All-America honors, including three from the 2023 season. They went 27-5 last season and hosted the Atlantic Regional, winning their first match of the NCAAs.
• Colorado Mesa University is in Grand Junction Colorado. The Mavericks are ranked No. 17 in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Preseason Division II Poll and were picked second in the RMAC preseason poll. They finished 24-5 last season with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament and return 2023 RMAC Player of the Year Sydney Leffler, RMAC Setter of the Year Sabrina VanDeList, and RMAC Defensive Player of the Year Allison Waller.
• Colorado School of Mines is in Golden, Colorado. The Orediggers were picked sixth in the RMAC preseason poll after going 14-12 last season. It's the 15th time since 2008, Mines is hosting the Oredigger Volleyball Classic.

OTHER TEAMS AT CLASSIC
• No. 5 Concordia-St. Paul, Concord, and Missouri Western are also competing in the event.

COACH JENNINGS
• Head coach Matt Jennings is in his 12th season with the Huskies and has won 206 matches overall. He ranks second in wins in program history.
• Jennings is the chair of the NCAA Volleyball Championships Committee. It's the sixth year working on NCAA postseason matters.
• Under Jennings, the Huskies have gone from last place in the conference to nationally ranked and consistently in the NCAA Tournament.
• Jennings coached the Huskies to four straight NCAA tournament appearances from 2017-21.
• He was named the GLIAC Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2017 and led the team to a program record of 10 straight wins to start the 2016 season.
• The 2021 spring team won a GLIAC Regular Season title for the second time in program history with the 2021 team repeating the feat in outright fashion.

LAST SEASON
• Tech finished the 2023 season with a 15-16 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the GLIAC.
• The Huskies advanced to the GLIAC Tournament Semifinal for the seventh straight season as the fourth seed.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
• The Huskies host the UP North Tournament next weekend at the SDC Gym. Tech will play No. 16 Minnesota Duluth, Findlay, and No. 10 St. Cloud State.
• The GLIAC schedule gets underway the following weekend at Purdue Northwest (Sept. 20) and Parkside (Sept. 21).
