PREVIEW: Huskies return to SDC Gym for a pair of GLIAC matches

WEEKEND MATCHES
• Michigan Tech begins a four-match home stand this weekend at the SDC Gym.
• The Huskies host No. 7 Ferris State at 6 p.m. on Friday.
• The weekend wraps up on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Davenport.
• The Huskies are 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC.

WEEKEND PROMOS

LAST TIME OUT
• Tech opened GLIAC play with a split on the road.
• The Huskies defeated Purdue Northwest 3-1 on Friday. The Huskies improved to 9-0 all-time against the Pride after winning 25-18, 25-16, 21-25, and 25-23.
• Tech fell 3-2 at Parkside on Saturday. The Huskies won the second and fourth sets but the Rangers closed out the victory 15-12 in the fifth.
• Meg Raabe led the offense (3.22 k/s) with Tess Hayes setting the attack (9.11 a/s) and Brynn Erickson (3.22 d/s) anchoring the back row.

GLIAC STATISTICAL RANKING
• Tess Hayes leads in assists per set (10.03)
• Kaycee Meiners is fourth in blocks (33)
• Paige Wagner is fourth in hitting percentage (.383)
• Amelia Albers is seventh in digs per set (3.53)
• Meg Raabe is seventh in kills per set (3.47)

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
• Ferris State is 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC.
• The Bulldogs are ranked No. 7 in the AVCA/Taraflex Top 25 Poll.
• FSU leads the conference in assists per set, digs per set, hitting percentage, and kills per set.
• Olivia Henneman-Dallape leads the GLIAC in kills per set (4.58), Kaylee Maat is second in assists per set (9.94) and Emma Bleecher is second in aces per set (0.52).
• FSU went 27-8 overall last season and claimed the GLIAC Tournament Championship along with making the school's 27th all-time trip to the NCAA tournament.
• The Bulldogs were picked first in the GLIAC Preseason Poll and return five all-conference players from 2023.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
• Davenport is 2-8 overall and 0-2 in the GLIAC. The wins are over Trevecca Nazarene and Glenville State. The Panthers lost in straight sets at Wayne State and Grand Valley State last weekend.
• Abby Alan (3.06 k/s) and Rachel Young Blood (2.84 k/s) lead the offense. Mehl Hansen (6.32 a/s) sets the attack and Hayley Carr (4.23 d/s) leads the defense.
• Charley Andrews is in her first season as head coach.
• Davenport went 12-18 overall last season and 8-10 in the GLIAC. The Panthers were picked seventh in the GLIAC Preseason Poll.

GLIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• Sept. 9 – Tess Hayes – GLIAC Setter of the Week

UP NORTH ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
• Rachel Zurek was named to the UP North All-Tournament Team.
• She hit .468 on the weekend while averaging 2.3 kills per set.

OREDIGGER CLASSIC MVP
• Junior Meg Raabe was named MVP on the All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.6 kills and 4.0 points per set on the weekend.
• She tallied 54 kills, 14 digs, 8 blocks, 2 assists, and 2 aces in the opening weekend.

PRESEASON GLIAC POLL
• In the 2024 Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Huskies were picked third in the GLIAC behind Ferris State and Grand Valley State which both received first-place votes.
• The Bulldogs had 97 points, including seven first-place votes. The Lakers were a close second with 94 points and four first-place nominations. The Huskies had 79 points followed by Parkside (71), Northern Michigan (67), Wayne State (48), Davenport (46), and Purdue Northwest (44) in the top eight. Lake Superior State (27), Saginaw Valley State (18), and Roosevelt (14) rounded out the poll.

COACH JENNINGS
• Head coach Matt Jennings is in his 13th season with the Huskies and has won 211 matches overall. He ranks second in wins in program history.
• Jennings is the chair of NCAA Volleyball Championships Committee. It's the sixth year working on NCAA postseason matters.
• Under Jennings, the Huskies have gone from last place in the conference to nationally ranked and consistently in the NCAA Tournament.
• Jennings coached the Huskies to four straight NCAA tournament appearances from 2017-21.
• He was named the GLIAC Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2017 and led the team to a program record of 10 straight wins to start the 2016 season.
• The 2021 spring team won a GLIAC Regular Season title for the second time in program history with the 2021 team repeating the feat in outright fashion.

LAST SEASON
• Tech finished the 2023 season 15-16 overall record with a 10-8 mark in the GLIAC.
• The Huskies advanced the GLIAC Tournament Semifinal for the seventh straight season as the fourth seed.

• The Huskies continue the home stretch by hosting Lake Superior State (Oct. 4) and Saginaw Valley state (Oct. 5) next weekend.
• Tech travels to Northern Michigan (Oct. 10) for a Thursday match and then hosts Roosevelt on Oct. 12 before heading down to the Midwest Regional Crossover (Oct. 18-19).
