PREVIEW: Huskies host UP North Tournament at SDC Gym

WEEKEND MATCHES
• No. 20 Michigan Tech hosts the UP North Tournament this weekend at the SDC Gym.
• Tech plays No. 14 Minnesota Duluth at 10 a.m. Friday in the home-opener.
• Friday wraps up against Findlay at 6:30 p.m.
• The Huskies host No. 7 St. Cloud State on Saturday at 3 p.m.

GLIAC SETTER OF THE WEEK
• Sophomore Tess Hayes is the GLIAC Setter of the Week.
• She helped lead Tech to a 4-0 record at the Oredigger Classic, averaging 10.87 assists per set and 1.93 digs per set while also tallying 12 aces and seven blocks.
• Hayes recorded 34 assists and three blocks in a win over No. 13 Regis, 51 assists and six digs against Gannon, 36 assists and four blocks versus No. 17 Colorado Mesa, and 42 assists and 12 digs against host Colorado Mines.

HUSKIES RANKED
• Tech jumped into the AVCA/Taraflex Top 25 with a No. 20 ranking this week.
• The Huskies were last ranked in September 2022, checking in at No. 19.
• St. Cloud State is ranked tied for No. 7 and Minnesota Duluth is No. 14 in this week's poll.
• Other GLIAC teams in the top 25 are No. 12 Ferris State and No. 19 Grand Valley State.
• Last weekend, Tech defeated three teams that went to the 2023 NCAA Tournament and a pair of teams that were in the top 25 to earn the top 20 ranking.

OREDIGGER CLASSIC MVP
• Junior Meg Raabe was named MVP on the All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.6 kills and 4.0 points per set on the weekend.
• She tallied 54 kills, 14 digs, 8 blocks, 2 assists, and 2 aces in the opening weekend.

PRESEASON GLIAC POLL
• In the 2024 Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Huskies were picked third in the GLIAC behind Ferris State and Grand Valley State which both received first-place votes.
• The Bulldogs had 97 points, including seven first-place votes. The Lakers were a close second with 94 points and four first-place nominations. The Huskies had 79 points followed by Parkside (71), Northern Michigan (67), Wayne State (48), Davenport (46), and Purdue Northwest (44) in the top eight. Lake Superior State (27), Saginaw Valley State (18), and Roosevelt (14) rounded out the poll.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
• Minnesota Duluth opened its season going 4-0 at the Texas A&M Kingsville Invitational, falling in only three sets. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 14 this week after being No. 16 in the preseason poll. UMD went 18-11 last season with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Graduate outside hitter Cianna Selbitschka was an AVCA All-American Third Team member last season.
• Findlay is 3-0 with wins last weekend over Davis & Elkins, Shippensburg, and Clarion, dropping only one set. The Oilers were picked second in the North Division of the G-MAC Preseason Poll. They went 23-8 last season with an appearance in the conference semifinal.
• St. Cloud State is 3-1 after a trip to San Bernardino, California. The Huskies fell in their first match to No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona but bounced back with wins over No. 12 Chaminade, No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino, and No. 1 Cal State LA. SCSU jumped from No. 10 in the AVCA poll to a tie for No. 7. Kenzie Foley was the 2023 NSIC Player of the Year, D2CCA Central Region Player of the Year, AVCA Central Region Player of the Year, D2CCA Ron Lenz National Player of the Year, AVCA DII National Player of the Year. The Huskies went 22-9 last season with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

COACH JENNINGS
• Head coach Matt Jennings is in his 13th season with the Huskies and has won 210 matches overall. He ranks second in wins in program history.
• Jennings is the chair of NCAA Volleyball Championships Committee. It's the sixth year working on NCAA postseason matters.
• Under Jennings, the Huskies have gone from last place in the conference to nationally ranked and consistently in the NCAA Tournament.
• Jennings coached the Huskies to four straight NCAA tournament appearances from 2017-21.
• He was named the GLIAC Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2017 and led the team to a program record of 10 straight wins to start the 2016 season.
• The 2021 spring team won a GLIAC Regular Season title for the second time in program history with the 2021 team repeating the feat in outright fashion.

LAST SEASON
• Tech finished the 2023 season 15-16 overall record with a 10-8 mark in the GLIAC.
• The Huskies advanced the GLIAC Tournament Semifinal for the seventh straight season as the fourth seed.
