ESCANABA, Mich. – The Michigan Tech cross country squads wrapped up the regular season, seeing the men's team win the Bay College Invite with a perfect score of 15 points, in Escanaba, Michigan, on Friday afternoon.
Quotable
I was quite pleased with the competitiveness this crew brought today," Tech head cross country coach Robert Young said. "We didn't know exactly what to expect at this course since we hadn't seen it before and it turned out to be a pretty tough track. The number of tight turns and gradual hills probably slowed times a bit, but our crew managed those challenges well. We came looking to get more XC racing experience and to develop and I'm confident we did that and will be better athletes the next time we race."
"It was fun to race with a more low-key atmosphere here in the U.P.," assistant coach Luke Moore added. I think the connectedness of our crew showed today. This was a great opportunity to return to the fun of cross country racing without too much pressure."
Freshman Grace Folkema (20:36.1) placed fourth overall in the opening race of the day, the women's 5k, as the Huskies finished among the top-13 in a field of 36 runners. Brielle Kero took seventh overall in 20:50.8. Sam Shaver (21:05.4) and Julia Moxey (21:46.5) finished 10th and 13th, respectively.
Sophomore Donavan Mattson paced the Black & Gold in the men's 8k, taking fourth overall in 27:16.1. Luke Pravecek was close behind in 27:19.5 as the second scorer for MTU. Sophomore Nik Thomas marked the third Husky to finish in under 28 minutes with his time of 27:42.2, placing him sixth overall but third in the team race. Brady Hager (28:02.2) and Derin Apul (28:06.6) rounded out the top-five for Michigan Tech.Â
