PREVIEW: Volleyball heads to Crossover for three matches

WEEKEND MATCHES
• Michigan Tech travels to Hammond, Indiana for the 16th annual Midwest Regional Volleyball Crossover Tournament.
• The Huskies are the No. 4 seed from the GLIAC and open against No. 19 Quincy at 3 p.m. Eastern on Friday.
• Tech plays again at 8 p.m. versus Tiffin.
• Saturday's matchup will depend on Friday's results.
• The Huskies are 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the GLIAC.
 
CROSSOVER
• The 16th annual Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover Tournament, the nation's largest collegiate volleyball, will be held in Hammond, Ind., at the Hammond SportsPlex on October 18-19, 2024.
• Each team will be guaranteed three matches and every session will utilize six courts at once. Purdue Northwest's John Friend Court will also be utilized for three matches on Friday.
• The 2024 Midwest Volleyball Crossover features 38 schools from the GLIAC, GLVC and GMAC. These three Division II conferences span 8 states and make up a good portion of the Midwest.
• The G-MAC will field a total of 13 teams, the GLVC will have 14 institutions competing, and the GLIAC will travel 11 different programs.
 
WATCH THE CROSSOVER
• Fans can watch the Crossover by using the JEDtv app on their smartphones, as well on their TV via Roku or Amazon Fire TV.
• Tournament passes will cost $40, with each team playing 3 games.
• Single game PPV passes will be available for $20.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
• Quincy – QU is 16-1 overall and 5-0 in the GLVC. The Hawks are ranked No. 19 in this week's AVCA Top 25 Poll. They rank 12th in the nation in assists per set (13.26) and kills per set (14.25). The Hawks return a pair of All-American, All-Region and First Team All-GLVC selections in Emma Wijnbergen (RS) and Alice Pavan (MB). Wijnbergen leads the nation in kills pet set (5.42).
• Tiffin – TU is 9-7 overall and 4-4 in the GMAC. The Dragons are ninth in the nation in blocks pet set (2.69) and Kaylee Freund leads the nation in total blocks (102) and is third nationally in blocks per set (1.5). Tech has won the last eight matches against the Dragons and won 3-1 in the last meeting at the Crossover in 2018.

• Paige Wagner is third in hitting percentage (.394)
• Meg Raabe is seventh in kills per set (3.47)

LAST TIME OUT
• Tech splits its weekend with a 3-1 loss at Northern Michigan on Thursday and a 3-0 sweep of Roosevelt on Saturday at the SDC Gym.
• Rachel Zurek led the offense (3.29 k/s), Tess Hayes set the attack (10.86 a/s), and Amelia Albers led the defense (4.00 d/s).

UP NORTH ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
• Rachel Zurek was named to the UP North All-Tournament Team.
• She hit .468 on the weekend while averaging 2.3 kills per set.
 
OREDIGGER CLASSIC MVP
• Junior Meg Raabe was named MVP on the All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.6 kills and 4.0 points per set on the weekend.
• She tallied 54 kills, 14 digs, 8 blocks, 2 assists, and 2 aces in the opening weekend.

COACH JENNINGS
• Head coach Matt Jennings is in his 13th season with the Huskies and has won 215 matches overall. He ranks second in wins in program history.
• Jennings is the chair of NCAA Volleyball Championships Committee. It's the sixth year working on NCAA postseason matters.
• Under Jennings, the Huskies have gone from last place in the conference to nationally ranked and consistently in the NCAA Tournament.
• Jennings coached the Huskies to four straight NCAA tournament appearances from 2017-21.
• He was named the GLIAC Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2017 and led the team to a program record of 10 straight wins to start the 2016 season.
• The 2021 spring team won a GLIAC Regular Season title for the second time in program history with the 2021 team repeating the feat in outright fashion.

LAST SEASON
• Tech finished the 2023 season 15-16 overall record with a 10-8 mark in the GLIAC.
• The Huskies advanced the GLIAC Tournament Semifinal for the seventh straight season as the fourth seed.

• The regular season wraps up with trips to Davenport and Ferris State followed by Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State.
