Huskies and Nanooks tie 2-2 Saturday

Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The No. 9 ranked Michigan Tech hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Alaska on Saturday (Oct. 14) at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Logan Pietila scored both goals for the Huskies and had a highlight reel between-the-legs goal in the 2-1 exhibition shootout win.

"I'm proud of the resilience we showed tonight. The guys feel better after the shootout win even though it doesn't mean anything," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "Our young guys played well tonight, and we need them to continue to grow."

Logan Pietila scored his 33rd career goal and the first of his fifth season with the Huskies 18:19 into the game. He cleaned up a rebound out front on the power play with Chase Pietila and Patriks Marcinkevics assisting.

"It feels good to help the team get in the right direction, but we have a lot of work to do," Logan Pietila said.

Much like Friday night, Alaska responded early in the second period and took the lead. Brayden Nicholetts scored from Braden Birnie and Cade Neilson to tie the game 1:33 after intermission.

Anton Rubtsov scored on the power play from Brady Risk and TJ Lloyd at 12:04 to take the lead.

Unlike Friday, the Huskies didn't break. Kyle Kukkonen and Logan Pietila connected on a 2-on-1 for a 2-2 game 4:10 into the third.

The Huskies piled up four shots on goal in the 3-on-3 overtime but couldn't find the back of the net. Alaska hit the post to the left of Blake Pietila late in the period and the teams settled for a tie.

Max Koskipirtti opened the shootout with a goal. Logan Pietila went between the legs for a goal on his chance and his twin brother Blake shut the door for the shootout win.

"Mosley challenged me on the bench to go between the legs," added Pietila. "I decided to try it and it went in. It was fun."

Tech led in shots 30-23. Blake Pietila made 21 saves for the Huskies and Pierce Charleson had 28 saves for the visitors.

Both teams were 1-for-2 on the power play.

The Huskies continue the non-conference home stand next weekend, welcoming Wisconsin to Houghton for the first time since October 2011. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 6:07 p.m. Saturday.
