Huskies fall to Tommies Saturday

Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. – No. 13 Michigan Tech fell 3-2 to St. Thomas Saturday at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies twice held a one-goal lead, but the Tommies battled back each time and scored the game-winner with 3:33 left.

"St. Thomas was a better team tonight," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "We can't rely on Blake to always bail us out, and we gave up a lot of easy scoring chances."

Levi Stauber got the scoring started early with his second of the season 2:41 into the game. Jed Pietila carried the puck into the zone and flipped a one-handed pass. Stauber scored on a quick wrist shot over the glove of the goaltender.

UST (6-15-1, 5-10-1 CCHA) tied it up 14:17 into the first when Jake Braccini scored from Jarrett Lee just as a power play was ending for the visitors.

The Huskies retook the lead 12:25 into the second when Evan Orr cleaned up a loose puck in front of the net for his second of the season and second in the last four games. Parker Saretsky and Kash Rasmussen assisted on the play.

The Tommies again tied it up later in the second when Josh Eernisse scored from Carson Peters and Trevor Zins.

Jack Works thought he scored a go-ahead goal with 2:32 left in the second on a puck that bounced off the back glass and out front. His shot was gloved down at the goal line.

Luc Laylin scored the game-winning goal after finishing off a pass from Josh Eernisse on a 2-on-1 16:27 into the third.

Tech added the extra attacker with 1:41 remaining. Aaron Trotter had to make only two saves down the stretch while getting a pair of blocks from teammates in front of him.

The Huskies led in shots 29-22. Blake Pietila made 19 saves.

There were only three penalties called with Tech going 2-for-2 on the penalty kill and 0-for-1 on the power play.

Tech is 15-7-3 overall and 8-5-3 in the CCHA and travels to Ferris State next weekend.
