Huskies fall Saturday to Grand Valley

Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. – No. 19 Michigan Tech fell 3-0 Saturday to Grand Valley State at the SDC Gym. The Lakers won 25-22, 25-13, and 26-24. The Huskies are now 6-3 overall and 0-2 in the GLIAC.

"I think it was a better effort than last night," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "I saw some fight in the team that I was hoping to see that made the difference for parts of each set. Grand Valley is a really good team and they played well."

GVSU (7-3, 1-1 GLIAC) racked up 19 kills in the opening set. There were six ties before the visitors took a seven-point lead at 20-13. The Huskies showed late life with three straight points after GVSU got to setpoint, but the Lakers closed it out 25-22. Carissa Beyer had nine digs in the first.

The Lakers never trailed in the second after they hit .441 and Kendall Stover had six kills. GVSU closed the set on a 9-1 run to take a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

The third set saw eight ties. Morgan Radtke had a kill to tie it at 24 before back-to-back blocks by GVSU closed out the match. Janie Grindland tallied four kills in the third.

Janie Grindland led the Huskies with nine kills while Meg Raabe added eight. Olivia Heidel got her first start as the setter and finished with 28 assists and nine digs. Carissa Beyer paced the defense with 13 digs.

"I thought Olivia came in and did a really nice job in her first start," added Jennings. "Janie is doing a great job. I don't know how much more we can ask of her. She's leading this team the best way that she can with a great attitude and hard work."

Tech continues a four-match home stand on Friday by hosting Ferris State. Lake Superior State comes to the SDC Gym Saturday.

"We have the talent and when we are locked in playing hard we can be resilient," Jennings said. "We make young mistakes in some areas and we need to continue to come together as a group."
