BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 23-ranked Michigan Tech volleyball team fell 3-0 to No. 17 Ferris State in the GLIAC Tournament Championship from Ewigleben Sports Arena on Sunday (Nov. 24). The Bulldogs won 25-17, 25-22, and 25-18.
"Credit and congrats to Ferris for playing very well again tonight and for winning the GLIAC," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "They're a great team who is very hard to beat at home. They're good at every position and are difficult to score on. They really make you work for your points.
"We're a very good team that has a lot of weapons. We've taken incredible strides over the past few seasons and will continue to do so as we grow as a program. I'm disappointed we didn't win but so incredibly proud of our team for what we've done this season. I have a good feeling that we're not quite done yet."
The Huskies are 23-7 overall and will wait for Monday's release of the NCAA Tournament bracket. Tech was ranked No. 5 in this week's Midwest Regional Rankings. The field will be announced at 7:30 p.m. at NCAA.com.
The Bulldogs used a 9-1 run in the middle of the first set to take a 22-12 lead. Anna Jonynas, Emilia Widen, and MacAulay Petersen all had kills down the stretch, but it was too late as the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead with a 25-17 win.
Ferris (25-5) built a 15-10 lead in the second before the Huskies battled back to tie it at 20. Tech took the lead after an attacking error by the home team, but the Bulldogs closed the set on a 6-1 run for 25-22 win.
After six ties in the third, the Bulldogs went on an 8-1 run for a 20-15 advantage. Jonynas and Ghormley had kills late in the frame, but Ferris captured its sixth straight GLIAC Tournament Title with back-to-back kills for the 25-18 win.
Rachel Ping led a balanced Huskies attack with seven kills. Petersen and Ghormley added six kills each. Laura De Marchi set the offense with 24 assists. Megan Utlak piled up 26 digs. Grace Novotny (18 digs) and Jonynas (12 digs) were also in double digits defensively.
MacAulay Petersen and Rachel Ping were honored on the GLIAC All-Tournament Team.
