Volleyball Sweeps Home Weekend With 3-0 Win Over ODU

Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team swept Ohio Dominican on Saturday (Oct. 22) to wrap up a successful home weekend. The Huskies won 25-15, 25-21, and 25-18 to move to 11-12 overall and 6-4 in the GLIAC.

"It was a nice weekend overall," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "We're happy with the 2-0 record and glad to win some matches in front of our home crowd. Last night's comeback win gave us a lot of confidence coming in to today."

Tech jumped out to a commanding 13-3 lead in the first set and closed it out with four straight points, including three kills by Stephanie Dietrich.

ODU (8-12, 3-7 GLIAC) found its rhythm in the second frame. The home team led 21-20 before three errors by the Panthers, a Courtney Kurkie ace, and a MacAulay Petersen kill gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers took an early lead in set three. The Huskies battled back and much like the first two sets, controlled late, scoring the match's final six points.

"We played a clean aggressive match overall today," added Jennings. "We didn't have very many unforced errors and our offense was pretty spread out. We were on point with our serving and disrupted a good offensive team."

Aubrey Ficek led a balanced attack with 12 kills, hitting .300. She also added seven digs. Dietrich finished with nine kills while hitting .643. Petersen added eight kills. Rachel Pohlod set the attack with 40 assists and tallied 11 digs. Elle Heinonen led the team with  15 digs on defense.

The Huskies play their final two road matches of the regular season next weekend (Oct. 28-29) at Ferris State and Grand Valley.

"We're currently in a three-way tie for third place in the standings," Jennings said. "Next weekend will be an important weekend. Hopefully we can steal one at Ferris, and we're tied with Grand Valley, so a win there would be huge."

Friday's match at Ferris starts at 8 p.m. with a 4 p.m. first serve at Grand Valley Saturday.
