Volleyball Splits Matches in First Day of Annual Crossover

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AURORA, Ill. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team split a pair of matches today (Oct. 16) at the 2015 Mizuno Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover at the Great Lakes Center. The Huskies started the day with a straight-set win over Ohio Valley before falling to Lewis in a five-set thriller.

Michigan Tech 3, Ohio Valley 0

Stephanie Dietrich had a game-high 13 kills and hit .550 to lead the Huskies to a win in their first match of the tournament. The Huskies rolled to 25-14, 25-9 and 25-17 victories while hitting .652, .448 and .269 in sets one, two and three, respectively.

"Our middle attack and serves were too much for them," said head coach Matt Jennings. "I was happy that we took care of business."

Elle Heinonen led Tech with 10 digs in the match, while Noelle Eveland (nine kills, .500 hitting percentage) and Aubrey Ficek (seven kills) helped the Michigan Tech offensive attack.

The match was highlighted by the Huskies scoring the final 12 points of the second set.

Lewis 3, Michigan Tech 2

The Huskies battled a one-loss Lewis in five close sets. Michigan Tech won the first (26-24) and third (25-21) sets during the match.

"Tonight was the best match of the tournament so far," said Jennings. "It was one of those where the entire gym was on our court watching. We played well and with heart, and were in a position to beat one of the best programs in the country. The more experienced team won. We got better tonight and are focusing on Parkside."

Three different Huskies – Mariah Sherman (16), Noelle Eveland (13) and Aubrey Ficek (12) – had double-digit kills in the contest. Jacqueline Aird and Rachel Pohlod led the efforts defensively, registering 37 and 20 digs, respectively.

Michigan Tech (15-5 overall; 6-3 GLIAC) concludes play in the Crossover tomorrow (Oct. 17) with an afternoon match against UW-Parkside. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
