HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team won its second game in a row with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Minnesota Crookston on Friday (Sept. 12) night at Sherman Field. The Golden Eagles struck in the first half but a pair of second half tallies gave the Huskies the win.
"We came out a little slow in the first half with a lot of turnovers," head coach Michelle Jacob said. "In the second half, we just need to come out and play like we wanted it more."
Tied at one with 15 minutes left, Lexi Herrewig took a corner kick that flew through the air to the far post. Janelle Riedl was there to tap it in and give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. It was her first of the season and seventh of her career.
Five minutes into the second half, Sarah Boyd scored her first goal as a Husky as she connected on a pass from Herrewig up the middle and found the back of the net.
"Sarah had a good game tonight," Jacob said. "She's so speedy and pursues everything. She puts so much pressure on the other team. I'm happy for her to get her first goal."
The Golden Eagles opened the game's scoring three and a half minutes after first kick as they got the ball deep into Husky territory. Beth Lastovich found Delaney McIntyre open on the left side of the goal. She blasted a shot goalkeeper Jenna Phelps tipped but wasn't able to stop.
The Huskies maintained offensive pressure for most of the second half, taking seven shots and finishing the game with 12. Crookston took four shots.
Goalkeeper Jenna Phelps started the game for the Huskies and was replaced by Kirsen Hudak at halftime. Hudak had one save and earned her first win as a Husky.
Tech now enjoys a nine-day break before hosting Northern Michigan on Sept. 21 at Sherman Field.
"We're really excited about the conference opener next week," added Jacob. "It's nice to have some time to get healthy and work on some things in practice."
