Huskies Top Division I Green Bay 1-0 in Soccer

Box Score

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Michigan Tech earned a 1-0 road victory at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay today in women's soccer. The Huskies' fourth shutout win of the season came with an eight-save performance from goalkeeper MaryBeth Spoehr.

Tech managed to keep the game scoreless through halftime even though the host Phoenix held a 12-0 lead in shots including six on goal.

The Huskies, who focused on putting pressure on the ball all game, had it pay off in the 77th minute. A UWGB defender misplayed a pass, and Tech's Lexi Herrewig was there to collect it. She raced in one-on-one with the goalkeeper and chipped it high for her first goal of the season.

The score stood up through the final 13 minutes of the game to give Tech its fourth win of 2013 (4-2-0). Green Bay fell to 3-3-3 with the loss.

"It was an incredible team effort today," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "From forwards to midfield to defense to goalkeeper, everyone on the team played a really, really good game of soccer.

"MaryBeth was phenomenal in net. She made some huge saves for us that kept us in the game."

Spoehr improved to 3-1 on the year with the victory. Final shots on goal totals were 18-5 in favor of Green Bay.

Michigan Tech, which has 19 players from Wisconsin on its roster, had a nice crowd in attendance at the game.

"I have to give a big shout out to the fans," said Jacob. "It felt like two-thirds of the crowd was for us, and that made all the difference."

Tech will return home for a GLIAC game on Saturday (Sept. 28) vs. Northern Michigan. Opening kick is set for noon.
