Men's Tennis Closes Regular Season with Win in Ohio

FINDLAY, Ohio — Michigan Tech wrapped up a three-match GLIAC men's tennis road trip with a 6-3 victory at Findlay today. The Huskies finished the weekend with a 1-2 record and their 2013 regular season with a 15-8 mark (6-5 GLIAC). The Black and Gold fell at Ohio Dominican 7-2 Friday (Apr. 12) and lost at Tiffin 6-3 Saturday (Apr. 13) before winning today.

In the Ohio Dominican match, there were close matches on nearly every court. Tech's No. 2 doubles duo of Javier Oliveros and Built Yumuang earned an 8-4 victory in their match, but it was the only one of the three doubles flights to go in the Huskies' favor. Felipe Dos Santos and Pedro Rodriguez were edged at No. 1 doubles by a 9-7 count. ODU won five of the six singles flights even though three of them went to a third set. Rodriguez claimed his No. 4 singles match 6-7, 6-1, 14-12 in a super tiebreaker. Oliveros (No. 2) and Jimmy Konarske (No. 6) both fell in three sets.

Tech struggled with the rubber indoor court surface at Tiffin Saturday. The Huskies were swept in doubles, falling behind 3-0 before singles began. Dos Santos earned a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 1, and Rodriguez (No. 4) and Konarske (No. 6) followed suit with straight set wins as well. Oliveros (No. 2) and Nick Kremkow (No. 5) both pushed their matches to a third set before falling.

Michigan Tech bounced back with a 6-3 win at Findlay today to finish off the trip. The Oilers took a 2-1 lead after doubles, but it was the Huskies winning five of six singles flights to secure victory. Oliveros and Yumuang were the lone doubles winners for Tech with an 8-3 score at No 2. Tech picked up wins at every singles flight except No. 2. That included crucial three-set wins by Yumuang at No. 3 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 and Kremkow at No. 5 by a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 score.

Tech has now wrapped up its regular season and has earned a berth into the GLIAC Tournament next weekend (Apr. 19-21) in Midland, Mich. The pairings will be determined later this week.
