Box Score

ALLENDALE, Mich. — No. 25 Grand Valley State defeated Michigan Tech 49-3 in GLIAC football tonight at Lubbers Stadium. The Huskies totaled 338 yards of total offense, but gave up 507 yards and several big plays on special teams in the loss.

The game started well enough for the Black and Gold as DeShawn Nelson intercepted the Lakers' first play from scrimmage, and the drove inside the GVSU 10-yard line.

After a nine-yard run by Charlie Leffingwell on first down, the Huskies were stuffed on three straight runs and turned the ball over on downs.

GVSU went the length of the field in 10 plays capped by a 34-yard Heath Parling touchdown pass.

In the second quarter, Brett Gervais mishandled a punt return. It set up the Lakers' at the 16-yard line, and they punched it in six plays later for a 14-0 lead.

Tech got on the board at the 9:05 mark of the second quarter with Garrett Mead's 44-yard field goal—his longest of the season.

Grand Valley added two more scores before halftime. The first came after a blocked punt at Tech's one-yard line. The second came on a nine-play, 85-yard drive.

Tyler Scarlett completed a 40-yard pass to Anthony Root with seconds remaining before halftime to set up a 36-yard try for Mead. The kick was missed wide left, leaving the score 28-3 at the intermission.

The hosts scored on the first two possessions of the second half for a 42-3 score. Tech drove the ball inside the Lakers' 25 twice down the stretch but came away empty handed trying to go for touchdowns.

Scarlett completed 17-of-36 passes for 223 yards in the contest. Leffingwell posted 65 yards on 17 carries. Brandon Cowie was named Superior Player of the Game after hauling in game highs of 10 receptions for 133 yards.

Linebacker Taylor Ziolkowski led Tech's defensive effort with 11 tackles. Gervais added eight.

After playing three of its first four games on the road, Michigan Tech (2-2) returns home to face rival Northern Michigan next Saturday (Oct. 12). The battle for the Miner's Cup kicks off at 1 p.m.
