Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Michigan Tech volleyball team opened GLIAC play with a 3-1 win at Lake Superior State Friday (Sept. 14) evening.

“I'm very happy for this group and the fact that we started out conference play with a road win,” said head coach Matt Jennings. “We fought through some jitters in the first set, stayed tough and came out on top early. “

The Huskies earned a narrow victory in the first set, 25-23, and hit a match-high .417 to win the second set 25-13. The Lakers won a close set four, 25-23, but the Huskies won the fourth set, 25-22, to take the match.

“The second set was our best set overall so far on the season,” said Jennings. “We were operating on all cylinders. The final two sets were pretty close, but thanks to some big plays, we held on and came away with a well deserved victory.”

Shelby Jones led the Huskies with a double-double. The Regina, Saskatchewan, native finished with 12 kills and 10 digs along with two aces.

Jordanna Kero chipped in 11 kills and three blocks. Madeline Haben finished with 43 of the team's 48 assists.

“Our middles came through big for us and at big moments in the match,” said Jennings. “Maddie did a great job running the offense and getting everyone involved.”

The Huskies (4-5, 1-0) finished with advantages in kills (52-37), assists (48-36), service aces (9-4) and digs (65-53).

Tech will continue GLIAC play at Saginaw Valley State Saturday (Sept. 15).
