HOUGHTON, Mich. - Sophomore MaryBeth Spoehr posted her first shutout of the
season and the sixth of her career as the Michigan Tech soccer team
defeated Minnesota, Crookston 3-0 Sunday (Sept. 4) at Sherman
Field.
The Huskies posted a 14-2 advantage in shots in the first half but
had to wait until the 43rd minute to get on the scoreboard.
Freshman MacKenzie Jordan sent a cross from near the end line off a
free kick to freshman Alyssa Hynnek who volleyed the ball just
inside the far post for her first career goal.
Sophomore Lindsey Van Rooy extended the Tech lead to 2-0 with a
one-timer off a cross by sophomore Katie Boardman. Sophomore Annie Dahlquist also assisted on the goal in the 51st
minute.
Freshman McKenzie Hengesh concluded the scoring for the
Huskies with her second career goal in the 75th minute. Hengesh
collected a loose ball at the top of the penalty box and blasted a
shot into the top of the goal.
The Huskies (2-0-0) finished with a school-record 22 shots on goal.
Minnesota, Crookston (0-2-0) finished with two shots on goal.
"We were a little tired from yesterday's game and we forced things
at the start of the game," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "Once we calmed down and regained our
composure we were able to create some opportunities."
Tech will open conference play Wednesday (Sept. 7) against Upper
Peninsula rival Northern Michigan.
