HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech women's basketball team cut down the nets for a GLIAC Tournament Championship for a third time in four years today after defeating Ashland 63-53 in front of 1,343 fans at the SDC Gym.

Lucy Dernovsek was named GLIAC Tournament most valuable player and two other Huskies were selected to the all-tournament team. Tech has now won 13 straight games overall this season to improve to 26-2 heading into the NCAA Tournament.

"I'm so proud of the team," said head coach Kim Cameron. "They've been so steady all season long, and they've worked so hard."

Ashland (19-10) started with an 8-5 lead just four minutes into the game. Tech turned up the defensive intensity and held the Eagles to just eight more points in the half.

Sam Hoyt had an unbelievable save of a ball going out of bounds with five minutes left in the half. She then got the ball back and drained a 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock for a 19-14 advantage. The margin grew to 30-16 at the break after Dernovsek buried a 3-pointer on the half's final possession.

AU came out of halftime with an offensive surge-climbing within 32-24 in the first three minutes. That would be as close as the Eagles would get.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Dernovsek and Angela Guisfredi grew the lead to 15 with six minutes left. Staehlin added four points down the stretch to ice the win.

"Our first half defense was the most important part of the game today," said Cameron. "We weren't real sharp on offense, but defense and rebounding got us through."

Dernovsek recorded 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds and finished with 40 points and 35 rebounds in the tournament.

Staehlin and Hoyt were the other two Huskies named to the all-tournament team. Staehlin posted 16 points and four blocks, while Hoyt added 15 points.

Ashland out-shot Tech 40 percent to 37 percent, but the Huskies gained a huge advantage on the boards, 47-31. The hosts had 21 offensive rebounds that resulted in 17 second-chance points.

Tech has won all 15 games it has played at home this season and 29 in a row dating back to last year.

Michigan Tech will likely host the 2011 NCAA Midwest Regional for the second consecutive season. The NCAA will announce the pairings and schedule for the NCAA Tournament via webcast on NCAA.com tonight at 9:30 (ET).
