Tech Beats Wayne 68-54 in Women's Hoops

Box Score

DETROIT - The No. 8-ranked Michigan Tech women's basketball team took care of business on the road today with a 68-54 victory over Wayne State. The Huskies have now won five in a row to improve to 18-2 overall and 13-1 in the GLIAC. Paired with a Lake Superior State loss, the Huskies have taken a two-game lead in the GLIAC North Division standings.

Tech had four players score in double figures led by Lisa Staehlin, who had a game-high 17. The 6-2 senior and her fellow center, Lynn Giesler, combined to go 10-of-14 in the post for the Huskies.

Giesler's three layups midway through the first half turned a three-point margin into a nine-point Huskies' lead. The gap remained in single digits until Angela Guisfredi buried her second 3-pointer of the half. The visitors ended the half with a 35-22 advantage.

Wayne State (6-14, 6-8 GLIAC) battled to within seven at the 12-minute mark of the second half before a 9-0 Huskies run. Sam Hoyt started the spurt with pull-up jumper in the paint. The Warriors were never closer than 14 the rest of the way.

"I'm glad to get the win because Wayne's a tough place to play, and we've been on the road for a long time," said head coach Kim Cameron. "We had a couple of lulls in the second half, but overall I'm happy with the way we contained them."

Tech posted a 32-29 rebounding advantage, and both teams committed eight turnovers. The Huskies won the game with superior field goal shooting (54 percent to 36).

Guisfredi finished 5-of-7 from the field including a 3-of-3 mark from 3-point range. Hoyt (12) and Lucy Dernovsek (10) also reached twin figures.

Lindsey Lindstrom recorded a game-high 12 rebounds.

Michigan Tech will play its next game Saturday (Feb. 12) at Lake Superior State. The game will feature the top two teams in the GLIAC North Division. The Lakers own a 11-3 league record.
