Box Score UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - No. 7-ranked Michigan Tech limited Saginaw Valley State to 10 first-half points en route to a 64-54 GLIAC women's basketball victory at O'Neill Arena tonight. Lucy Dernovsek scored a game-high 17 points and 10 other Huskies had points as Tech improved to 22-2 overall and 17-1 in league play.
The Huskies led by 19 at half after holding the Cardinals to 13.8 percent field goal shooting (4-of-29) in the opening 20 minutes. The visitors expanded their lead to as many as 27 in the first three minutes of the second half and cruised from there.
SVSU was able to trim the margin to 10 in the final minutes as Tech's bench went scoreless for the final 4:05.
"Our first-half defense won us this game," said head coach Kim Cameron. "This is a tough place to play, and they were very physical.
"We were able to get more experience for our younger players, and any game you can win is a good one."
Tech's senior trio all reached double figures in points. Dernovsek went 8-of-13 from the field for her game-high 17 points. Lisa Staehlin tallied 10 points and nine rebounds. Angela Guisfredi added 10 points.
SVSU shot 57 percent from the field in the second half to finish at 35 for the game. Tech shot at a 49-percent clip. The Black and Gold held a 37-34 rebounding advantage, but gave up 14 offensive boards to the Cardinals.
Michigan Tech has now won nine straight games heading into its regular season finale at Northwood on Saturday (Feb. 26). Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
