Tech Women Shoot Past Lake Erie 89-49

Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The No. 8-ranked Michigan Tech women's basketball team buried a school-record 17 3-pointers en route to an 89-49 win over Lake Erie in the first-ever meeting between the teams. The Huskies shot 73 percent from long range and 63 percent from the field overall to improve to 21-2 and 16-1 in league play.

The Storm (3-20, 2-15 GLIAC) scored the first basketball of the game, but it was all Tech from there. Sam Hoyt buried back-to-back 3-pointers for a 13-4 lead at the 15:28 mark. Five straight points from Krista Kasuboski made it a 27-8 score at the 8:24 mark. Hoyt's fourth triple of the half at the 1:51 mark widened the gap to 26.

Even a 30-foot heave from Lucy Dernovsek at the buzzer went in for the Black and Gold. The margin at half was 44-17.

Tech continued to blister the nets in the second half. Kasuboski got hot with three more treys in the frame. She eventually tallied a career-high 16 points and tied Hoyt for game-high scoring honors.

Head coach Kim Cameron went to the bench liberally in the second half. Tech's three seniors-Dernovsek, Angela Guisfredi and Lisa Staehlin-all received a nice ovation as they left the floor at the 4:52 mark on Senior Day.

"Our veterans really set the tone for us today," said Cameron. "Then I was really happy with the way our younger kids came in. They played hard and extended the lead. I think they all got better today."

Michigan Tech held the Storm to 29 percent shooting including 18 percent from 3-point range. The Huskies also used a 39-23 rebounding edge.

Thirteen different Tech players played, and 11 of those scored points. Hoyt and Kasuboski were the only two in double figures. Guisfredi and Dernovsek each added nine points. Dernovsek registered a career-high assists

Tech has won 26 consecutive home games dating back to Jan. 2, 2010. The Huskies are a perfect 12-0 at the SDC Gym this season.

Michigan Tech will hit the road for its final two regular season games starting with a Thursday (Feb. 24) game at Saginaw Valley State.

Notes: The previous record for 3-pointers in a game was 16, which came Nov. 27, 2004, vs. St. Cloud State ... Kasuboski's previous career high was 15 on five 3-pointers vs. Saginaw Valley State (Jan. 15, 2011) ... Tech has won eight straight games overall since a Jan. 20 loss at Ferris State.
