No. 8 Ladies Need Overtime to Beat LSSU 70-68

Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lindsey Lindstrom's layup with 31 seconds left stood up as the game winner in Michigan Tech's 70-68 overtime victory at Lake Superior State today. The Huskies had two-point leads at the end of both regulation and overtime, but it was in the overtime that Tech got the defensive stop it needed to claim the win.

LSSU's Emily Joseph made a driving layup with 20 seconds left in regulation to put the hosts up 57-56. Tech regained the lead on Lisa Staehlin's three-point play at the :12 mark. Joseph tried to tie the game with another layup in the final seconds but missed. The rebound was tapped around, and the Huskies were whistled for a foul with half a second remaining.

Cassie Schemberger made both free throws of a double bonus to send the game to overtime.

In the extra session, Angela Guisfredi scored six points. None was bigger than a 3-pointer off a kick-out from Staehlin with 1:30 to go. That shot put the Black and Gold up 66-65.

The Lakers went back up one with 45 seconds left on a Maria Blazejewski layup. Lindstrom then made the game-winning layup on the next trip down for a 69-68 advantage. After a turnover, Sam Hoyt added a free throw for a 70-68 margin.

Much like the end of regulation, Joseph drove for a left-handed layup which she missed. The rebound was battled for and ruled a jump ball this time. With four seconds left, LSSU threw the ball in to Nicole Marshall, who missed an open 14-foot jumpshot as time expired.

"We fought and battled today," said head coach Kim Cameron. "Out shots didn't go in like they usually do, and we were able to overcome that."

Tech finished the game at 39.7 percent from field while the hosts made 43 percent of their tries. LSSU also owned a 47-33 rebounding advantage. The Huskies committed six fewer turnovers (10-to-16).

Staehlin finished with a team-high 17 points. Guisfredi added 16. Dernovsek posted 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists before fouling out.

Lindstrom tallied just five points, but played all 45 minutes-mainly with a defensive focus in guarding Joseph (10 points).

Blazejewski posted a game-high 23 points for the Lakers.

With the win, Tech (19-2 overall, 14-1 GLIAC) extended its lead in the GLIAC standings over LSSU (15-7, 12-4 GLIAC). The Huskies hold a three-game edge with only four regular season contests to play.

Michigan Tech will return home for its final two regular season home games next week. The Huskies host Ashland Thursday (Feb. 17) at 7:30 p.m.

Notes: The game featured 19 lead changes and 10 tie scores ... Tech led 30-26 at halftime ...The Huskies have defeated Lake Superior State seven straight times.
