HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech soccer team defeated Lake
Erie 2-1 to earn its second Great Lakes Intercolleigate Athletic
Conference victory of the season Sunday (Oct. 2). Lake Erie falls
to 1-10-0 overall and 0-8-0 in the conference.
"I was happy we were able to come away with the win today," said
head coach Michelle Jacob. "We had some good passes and
offensive chances."
Despite out shooting Lake Erie 11-2 in the first half, Tech would
have to wait until the second half to score its first goal. Amanda Whiting sent a centering pass to Alyssa
Hynnek who scored from the middle of the penalty box in the 61st
minute.
Lake Erie tied the game six minutes later off a free kick. Lauren
Gaitsch sent a free kick to Ally Miller who headed the ball past
Tech goalie Jacqui Landry.
Hengesh scored the game-winning goal for the Huskies in the 76th
minute with a header off a crossing pass by Katie Boardman. This was the third game this season
that Hengesh has scored three or more points in one game.
Tech finished with advantages in both shots (27-7) and corner kicks
(5-2).
MaryBeth Spoehr started the match for the
Huskies and made one save in one half of work. Landry made two
saves on three shots in one half of action for her first career
win.
Megan Baldacci finished with 12 saves for Lake Erie.
Tech will play at Tiffin Oct. 7th.
