HOUGHTON, Mich. - Heavy winds and rain could not stop the
Michigan Tech soccer team as it defeated Ferris State 2-1 in
conference play Friday (Oct. 14). Tech improves to 5-7-1 overall
and 3-7-1 in the league. Ferris falls to 6-6-2 overall and 6-3-2 in
the conference.
The Huskies found their offensive stride early in the game firing
six of its nine shots on goal in the first half.
The Huskies scored their first goal of the game in the 16th minute.
Katie Boardman sent a cross to Amber Hynnek who headed it to her sister Alyssa who
kicked it in for her third goal of the season.
Melanie Hoffman extended the Tech lead to 2-0
in the 42nd minute after she chipped a shot over the head of Ferris
goalie Rachel McCollum. Lindsey Van Rooy and Ann Dahlquist each assisted on
the goal.
Bri Borgman scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season for
the Bulldogs in the 64th minute.
Ferris State appeared to have scored the game-tying goal with 17
minutes left, but the goal was disallowed for offsides.
"I was proud of the way our girls capitalized on our chances early
to score two goals in the first half," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "We played smart playing into the
wind in the second half and were able to hold on for the win."
MaryBeth Spoehr made five saves on six shots
for the Huskies, and Rachel McCollum made six saves on eight shots
for the Bulldogs.
Tech will host defending national champion Grand Valley State
Sunday (Oct. 16).
