Ladies' 10-0 at Home after 63-52 Win over Hillsdale

Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech improved to 10-0 at home with a 63-52 win over Hillsdale in GLIAC women's basketball at the SDC Gym today. The No. 10-ranked Huskies dominated the glass 43-25 and held the Chargers to 31 percent shooting to improve to 16-2 overall and 11-1 in league play.

Tech had a double-digit lead less than eight minutes into the game as Sam Hoyt scored eight of the team's first 14 points. The margin grew to 13 on Lisa Staehlin's layup right before the halftime buzzer.

The Huskies picked up the second half where they left off the first and expanded advantage lead to as many as 17. Hillsdale (12-6, 6-6 GLIAC) would make a run in the final 10 minutes. The Chargers pulled within eight as a full-court press helped the visitors close within 52-44 with four minutes left.

Angela Guisfredi's 3-pointer with 1:45 to play turned the tide back in the hosts favor. Lucy Dernovsek and Hoyt both scored points each time HC drew within nine in the final two minutes.

"I'm a little upset that we let them back in the game in the second half, but very happy with the win," said head coach Kim Cameron. "Our defense did an awesome job in the first half, and offensive rebounds were huge for us."

Tech had nine of its 14 offensive rebounds in the opening 20 minutes and held HC to 18 first half points. The Black and Gold shot 43 percent from the field for the game and buried 10-of-22 3-point looks. Hillsdale shot 2-of-16 from behind the arc, but stayed in the game with 18-of-18 foul shooting.

Hoyt tallied her third straight game with at least 18 points as she went 6-of-13 from the field and 4-of-8 from 3-point range. Staehlin had a big game in the post with 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Guisfredi also reached double figures with 11 points.

Lindsey Lindstrom, who was guarding one of the league's top scorers in Chelsea Harrison (third at 16.3 per game), had another strong performance. The 6-0 forward had a game-high 11 rebounds and six assists.

Harrison led the Chargers with 15 points, but made just 5-of-12 shots including 1-of-6 3-pointers in 39 minutes of play.

Michigan Tech owns a 24 game home winning streak. The Huskies last home loss was Jan. 2, 2010.

Tech will play its next three games on the road starting with GLIAC South Division leader Findlay next Thursday (Feb. 3). Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m.
