Box Score ALLENDALE, Mich. - The No. 8-ranked Michigan Tech rebounded from its Thursday loss at Ferris State in a big way. The Huskies scored their highest total of the season in defeating No. 19 Grand Valley State 84-64 in a battle of top-25 teams. Tech is now 14-2 overall and 9-1 in the GLIAC. GVSU fell to 13-4 overall and 7-4 in the league.
Michigan Tech made its first eight shots in the game for a 17-3 lead and kept scoring at will throughout the opening 20 minutes. The Black and Gold swished 68 percent of its chances for a 51-25 lead at the break.
The margin grew to as many as 32 in the second half as Sam Hoyt buried a 3-pointer at the 11:43 mark. GVSU worked hard to get back into the game, but the Huskies maintained at least an 18-point margin the rest of the way..
"I'm really proud of how we bounced back," said head coach Kim Cameron. "Each player took Thursday's loss to heart and channeled it into a positive. We came out with an attitude that we weren't going to lose, and that was great to see."
Leading the way for Tech's offensive outburst were Hoyt and Lucy Dernovsek. Hoyt posted a team-high 18 points, leading the team in scoring against GVSU for the second time this season (she had 19 vs. GVSU on Dec. 19). Dernovsek tallied 17 points and 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.
Lisa Staehlin, with 10 points, was the only other Husky in double figures. Tech's bench contributed 29 points and outscored GVSU's by 18.
Tech finished at 53 percent from the field in the contest and held a 45-27 rebounding advantage. The Lakers shot 37 percent.
GVSU's Briauna Taylor scored a game-high 33 points to account for more than half of her team's points.
Michigan Tech has now defeated Grand Valley State 10 straight times dating back to 2007.
The Huskies will return to action Thursday (Jan. 27) with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff against Northwood at the SDC Gym.
