Box Score BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Ferris State closed the game with a 17-2 run to upset No. 8-ranked Michigan Tech 63-60 tonight at Wink Arena. The Huskies scored just two points in the final 5:25 in having their 10-game winning streak snapped. Tech is now 13-2 overall and 8-1 in GLIAC play. FSU improved to 8-8 overall and 4-6 in the league.
Michigan Tech played a shaky first half but led 33-29 thanks to hitting 6-of-15 3-pointers. The Huskies' post players had zero field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes as the Bulldogs double- and triple-teamed Lisa Staehlin and Lynn Giesler.
The Huskies couldn't pull away in the second half until 3-pointers for Angela Guisfredi and Krista Kasuboski expanded the margin to 58-46 with 5:25 remaining.
FSU made its charge from there, turning several Tech turnovers into points. Tricia Principe hit two 3-pointers for the Bulldogs to pull them within 60-59 under a minute. After a Huskies' miss, FSU ran the floor and got a go-ahead layup from Tiara Adams with 34 seconds.
Sam Hoyt then tried to pass the ball to Staehlin under the hoop, but it was intercepted. Tech was forced to foul, and Principe made two foul shots with 17 seconds left
Tech didn't get a good look at a game-tying 3-pointer.
"Our offense was out of sync all night," said head coach Kim Cameron. "We didn't handle the ball very well.
"We have to leave this one behind when we leave the gym tonight and be ready to go on Saturday."
Lucy Dernovsek posted a game- and career-high 21 points by making 8-of-13 field goals and 4-of-6 free throws. Hoyt, with 11, was the only other Husky in double figures. Staehlin and Giesler combined to go 1-of-3 from the field and had six points between them. Staehlin did make significant contributions on the defensive end with eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Adams led the way for FSU with 19 points. Principe's eight points came in the final 2:40.
The Bulldogs made 18-of-21 free throws compared to 9-of-12 by the Huskies. Tech's total of 16 turnovers led to 17 FSU points. Both teams finished with 30 rebounds.
Michigan Tech will continue its two-game road trip with a battle of nationally-ranked teams on Saturday (Jan. 22). The No. 8 Huskies face No. 19 Grand Valley State at 3 p.m.
