Box Score HOUGHTON, Mich. - There's only one team left with an unblemished GLIAC record in women's basketball, and that team is No. 9-ranked Michigan Tech after it overcame a 35-30 halftime deficit to defeat Lake Superior State 69-66 tonight at the SDC Gym.
Lisa Staehlin had a monster second half with 16 points, but it was Angela Guisfredi who had the two biggest shots of the game.
Guisfredi swished a pull-up jumper in the paint at the five-minute mark to put Tech up 62-60. Then two minutes later, the 5-5 guard drained a 3-pointer for a 65-60 lead. LSSU hit a free throw at the 2:20 mark, but the margin remained four all the way down under a minute. Lucy Dernovsek's free throws with 36 seconds to play pushed the gap to 67-61.
The teams traded points before the Lakers' Emily Joseph converted a three-point play with 4.9 remaining. Sam Hoyt had two chances to ice the game at the free throw line, but had both attempts rattle out with 4.1 showing. Sarah Marshall rebounded the second miss and fired a halfcourt shot that was off the mark, allowing the Huskies to improve to 12-1 overall and 7-0 in the conference.
"This is an awesome win for us," said head coach Kim Cameron. "We really challenged our post players in the locker room at halftime, and Lisa responded like you hope a fifth-year senior would. She controlled the play in the half, and we needed that."
Staehlin's 16-point half was part of a career-best 20 points on the night for the 6-2 center. Dernovsek turned in her fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Lindsey Lindstrom added 13 points, nine rebounds a three blocks.
Joseph registered a game-high 22 points for Lake Superior State, which fell to 9-4 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC.
Tech held the game's early advantage before the visitors used an 11-2 run to move ahead. The Lakers went on to shoot 58 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes including back-to-back 3-pointers to end the half with the five-point lead.
Staehlin notched 12 points in the first nine minutes of the second stanza to help the Black and Gold erase their halftime deficit. The game was close the rest of the way.
Tech held a 35-25 rebounding edge and finished the game with slim advantage in shooting percentage (49.0 to 46.2).
Michigan Tech, winner of nine straight games, will polish off a four-game home stand on Saturday (Jan. 15) by entertaining Saginaw Valley State. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
