Volleyball Gets in Win Column with 3-0 Score vs. Glenville State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Michigan Tech volleyball team picked up its first win of 2010 with a sweep of Glenville State this morning at Ferris State. The Huskies won in three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-17 to improve to 1-2 overall.

Tech dominated the match by hitting .323 as a team compared to .031 for the Pioneers. The Huskies also served up 12 aces including three from Tessa Mauer.

Offensively, the Huskies were led by Kristine Sexton's eight kills. Alicia Schneider posted a .500 hitting percentage while Alex Schwalbe hit .429.

"Obviously, we're happy with the win," said head coach Orlando Gonzalez. "To compete at a high level, we need to continue to get better. We'll get a true test for where we're at when we play Minnesota State Mankato this afternoon."

Tech's first win came after it suffered a second straight five-set loss last night. The Huskies were edged 3-2 by Mercyhurst with set scores of 25-18, 16-25, 20-25, 27-25 and 15-10.

Tech was within two points of putting the match away in four sets.

"We have to learn how to win," said Gonzalez of the Mercyhurst match. "We're going to be in those situations a lot this season, and we need to learn from this and move on."

The Huskies are 1-2 for the weekend with a 3-2 loss to St. Cloud State, a 3-2 loss to Mercyhurst and a 3-0 win over Glenville State.

Michigan Tech wraps up weekend play today with a 3 p.m. tilt vs. Minnesota State Mankato.
