HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech volleyball team played its
home opener vs. Ashland tonight at the SDC Gym. The visiting Eagles
came away with a 3-0 victory with set scores of 25-21, 25-20 and
25-11.
Tech played well through most of game one. The Huskies held a
20-18 lead before AU mounted a comeback. The Eagles scored six
straight points before
Alicia
Schneider's emphatic kill stopped the momentum. It was only for
a side out, however. AU put away the set on the next point.
A four-point run by Ashland midway through the second frame
proved to be the difference in set two.
In set three, the Eagles jumped out to a 13-4 lead and never
looked back.
"We had the right strategy going into the match," said head
coach Orlando
Gonzalez. "We just didn't execute the game plan. We're going to
continue to struggle until we execute better."
Schneider posted a team-high eight kills for the Huskies. Kristine
Sexton had five kills but hit -.067 for the match. Four of her
five kills came in the opening set.
Tessa
Mauer's 11 digs and Madeline
Haben's 12 assists also paced the Black and Gold.
Ashland posted a .236 hitting percentage for the match
compared to the Huskies' .056.
Michigan Tech (1-7 overall and 0-4 in the GLIAC) will try to
rebound against Lake Erie tomorrow. Match time at the SDC Gym is
slated for 4 p.m.
