Box Score
HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech rolled over Ashland 73-34 in
women's basketball today for its 10th straight win and 20th
overall. For the second straight game, Tech (20-1, 15-1 in the
GLIAC) jumped out to a big lead and cruised to victory.
The Huskies were up 10-2 and 18-6 early in the first half. Angela
Guisfredi's 3-pointer at the 7:38 mark made it a 15-point
bulge. Maria Kasza then made two
triples-the only points scored by either team in the final five
minutes of the frame-to push the advantage to 37-15 at the
break.
Ashland (11-10, 7-9 GLIAC) didn't score until the 17:33 mark of the
second half, breaking an eight-minute drought. Considering the
Eagles' last points of the opening half and first points of the
second stanza were free throws, the visitors went 14 minutes
between field goals.
Tech's margin expanded to as many as 41 before the final horn.
The only cause for concern for Huskies' fans at the game was an
ankle injury to starting center Danae Danen midway through
the first half. She did not return to the game for precautionary
reasons.
"We really clamped down defensively today," said head coach John
Barnes. "We got back in transition and forced them into a
halfcourt game. We really pressured their perimeter and kept them
from getting the ball into the post.
"The bench really came in and did a great job again. Lisa
(Staehlin) and Lynn (Giesler) filled in really well when Danae went
down."
Katie Wysocky again paced
Tech in points with 17 to go with eight rebounds in 23 minutes.
Staehlin came off the bench to pull down a game- and career-high
nine rebounds. She and 10 other Huskies scored points in the
contest-none in double figures. Giesler, Sarah Stream, Maria
Kasza and Lucy Dernovsek all tallied
eight points each.
Michigan Tech held AU to just 12 field goals for the game and 21
percent shooting. The Black and Gold sank 48 percent from the floor
and forced 15 turnovers.
Michigan Tech will continue its four-game home stand next week with
games Thursday (Feb. 11) vs. Ferris State and Saturday (Feb. 13)
vs. Grand Valley State.
Notes: A Winter Carnival crowd of 1,450 was on hand. It was
Michigan Tech's fourth home crowd over 1,400 on the season …
Guisfredi made two 3-pointers in the game, making Tech 27-0 in the
last 27 games she has made a 3-point basket.
