HOUGHTON, Mich. - No. 3 Wisconsin scored two third period power
play goals to claim a 5-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win
over Michigan Tech at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena Friday
(Feb. 26).
The Badgers (20-8-4, 15-7-3) finished 2-6 on the power play and the
Huskies (5-25-1, 4-21-0) ended 0-3.
"We really complicated the game tonight," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "We turned the puck over in our end and on the rush.
We simply ran out of gas in the third period after losing a pair of
players to injury and then another to a major penalty."
Michigan Tech got on the scoreboard first thanks to a goal by
junior Bennett Royer at 3:52 of the
first period. Senior Malcolm Gwilliam and junior
Jordan Baker each assisted
on the goal.
The Badgers answered with a goal of its own five minutes later.
Junior Podge Turnball scored his second goal of the season with a
shot from the blue line. The goal stood after an official review
for goal tender interference.
The Huskies would enter the first intermission with a 2-1 lead
after sophomore Brett Olson scored his
team-leading 18th goal of the season at 16:54. Gwilliam recorded
his second assist of the evening while sophomore Ricky
Doriott notched his fifth assist of the season on the goal.
Senior Ben Street scored the lone goal of the second period with
his 13th goal of the season at 7:27 for the Badgers. He scored with
a low shot through the five-hole of Tech freshman goalie Kevin Genoe.
After entering the third period 2-2, the Huskies would give up a
pair of costly power play goals at 1:30 and 2:55.
Senior Andy Bombach would add a final goal for Wisconsin at
17:38.
Genoe (4-17-1) finished with 58 saves on the night, the most by a
Tech goalie since Rob Nolan made 59 saves in a
5-0 loss to Wisconsin on Feb. 17, 2006.
"Kevin was outstanding tonight. He made a number of good
saves."
Junior Scott Gundmandson (12-3-4) picked up the win for Wisconsin
with 20 saves.
The Huskies and Badgers will close out the weekend series in the
final home game for Tech Saturday (Feb. 26).
