Box Score

HILLSDALE, Mich. - Hillsdale overcame a 17-point deficit in the second half to upset No. 3-ranked Michigan Tech 68-65 in GLIAC women's basketball today. The Chargers (13-11, 13-7 GLIAC) finished the game on a 24-7 run to end the Huskies' (23-2, 18-2) winning streak at 13 games.

Hillsdale held a 31-28 lead at halftime after outrebounding Tech 19-12 in the opening 20 minutes. The hosts built up a seven-point lead with 2:52 remaining in the frame before back-to-back 3-pointers by Tara Ferris and Maria Kasza closed the gap to one. HC's Janay Miller swished a turnaround jumper to make it a three-point margin at the break.

Tech turned the tables in the second half by starting the frame on a 19-5 run. Hillsdale drew back within 47-42 at the 10:47 mark before the Huskies used another big run. This time it was a 14-2 spurt capped by five straight points from Angela Guisfredi that left the score 61-44 with six minutes remaining.

The Chargers lived up to their name from there. Thanks to two turnovers and two missed layups by Tech, the hosts scored 13 straight points to pull within four at the 2:40 mark. Sarah Stream stopped the bleeding with a drive and layup on the next possession, but Hillsdale scored seven more in a row to grab a 64-63 advantage.

Stream made another driving layup to regain the lead for the Black and Gold with :29 left. HC pushed the ball quickly and drew a foul, where Katie Bildner sank two free throws at :25. Stream missed a short jumper with :13 showing before Hillsdale added a free throw to its lead (67-65) two seconds later.

With one last chance to tie the game, Stream forced a pass inside to Katie Wysocky that was intercepted. The Chargers added a free throw for the final score.

"We didn't finish the game," said head coach John Barnes. "If we take care of the ball or box out a little better, we win.

"We can't keep getting ourselves into these close games and expect to win them all."

Stream turned in a team-high 18 points, while Wysocky, who entered the game averaging 18, scored just three.

Ferris (11 points), Katie Zimmerman (11) and Lindsey Lindstrom (10) all reached double figures for Tech.

Hillsdale held a 40-30 rebounding edge including 17 offensive boards. They also forced 20 Tech turnovers.

Michigan Tech will return home to wrap up the regular season next week with Lake Superior State Thursday (Feb. 25) and Saginaw Valley State Saturday (Feb. 27).
