Denver Skates To 5-2 Win Over Michigan Tech

DENVER - Senior Brandon Vossberg and junior Anthony Maiani each tallied one goal and added two assists to lead Denver to a 5-2 WCHA win over Michigan Tech in front of 5,625 fans at Magness Arena Friday (Feb. 19). Sophomore Brett Olson paced the Huskies with one goal and one assist.

"We came out and did a great job moving our feet in the first period," said head coach Jamie Russell. "We played a very good hockey game. We generated some great chances. Your margin of error against this team is very small. They are very talented and No. 2 for a reason."

Senior Cody Brookwell opened the scoring for the Pioneers with a slap shot from the top of the faceoff circle at 1:22 of the first period. Seniors Rhett Rakhshani and Tyler Ruegsegger each assisted on the goal.

The Huskies tied the game at 1-1 at 11:56 of the first period. Olson sent a pass across the crease to senior Malcolm Gwilliam who poked the puck between the legs of Denver junior goalie Marc Cheverie. The goal was the 63rd point of Gwilliam's career.

Denver took a 3-1 lead after goals by Ruegsegger at 17:00 of the second period and junior Kyle Ostrow at 6:14 of the third period.

Olson recorded his second point of the evening scoring his team-leading third short handed goal of the season at 7:39 of the third period. After receiving a pass from freshman Mikael Lickteig, Olson made a spin move around a defender before scoring his team-leading 17th goal of the season. The assist was the first point of Lickteig's career.

Maiani scored off his own rebound less than two minutes after the goal by Olson to extend the DU lead to 4-2.

The Huskies were unable to convert on a quality scoring chance that ended when a DU player cleared a puck off the goal line with five minutes to go.

Vossberg scored his first goal of the season at 17:29 of the third period to wrap-up the scoring in the game.

Freshman Kevin Genoe (4-16-1) finished with 37 saves for the Huskies and Cheverie (18-3-3) finished with 30 saves.

Neither team scored on the man advantage and Tech's streak of six straight games with a power play goal came to an end.

The two teams will close out the series Saturday (Feb. 20) at Magness Arena.
