No. 12 Women's Basketball Clips USI 56-47

Box Score

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The long road trip to Southern Indiana following an 11-day break proved fruitful as the No. 12-ranked Michigan Tech women's basketball team defeated USI 56-47. The final stat sheet (21 Tech turnovers and 21 Screaming Eagle offensive rebounds) belied the final outcome of the Huskies' ninth win of the season.

"I'm not sure how we won this game," said head coach Kim Cameron. "We were very lucky to be on the road and come away with the win."

Field goal shooting was the difference in the contest. USI was able to create 24 more shots for itself, but made four fewer field goals than the Huskies on the night. That equated to 48 percent for Tech and 25 percent for the hosts.

Michigan Tech closed out the first half on a 12-2 run to claim a 29-15 halftime lead. That spurt gave the Huskies the lead it maintained the rest of the way.

In the second half, USI managed to work the margin down to six. Lucy Dernovsek and Lindsey Lindstrom answered with a jumper and 3-pointer, respectively, to push the gap back up to 11. Sam Hoyt hit a timely 3-pointer with five minutes to play that again pushed the margin into double figures. Tech was able to keep the Eagles at arm's length to the final horn.

Dernovsek and Lindstrom both registered double-doubles for the Huskies. Dernovsek posted 19 points and 12 rebounds to go with four assists. Lindstrom notched 11 points and 12 rebounds.

USI pulled down 21 offensive rebounds, but was still beaten on the glass 45-36 in total boards. The Screaming Eagles only committed eight turnovers, but missed 50 field goals (17-of-67) in the contest.

Michigan Tech (9-1) will resume GLIAC play next Thursday (Jan. 6) at home against Northern Michigan.
