Dernovsek's 3-Pointer Gives Tech 64-61 Win at Tiffin

Box Score

TIFFIN, Ohio - Michigan Tech senior Lucy Dernovsek swished a 3-pointer with 5.1 seconds left for the game-winning points in a 64-61 GLIAC women's basketball victory at Tiffin today. The No. 15-ranked Huskies overcame a 33-29 halftime deficit to improve to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in league play.

The game was close the whole second half with neither team leading by more than five. The Dragons' Mandy Jaeb made two free throws to tie the score at 59 with 56 seconds to play. Tech answered with a layup from Lisa Staehlin as Sam Hoyt found her wide open on a set play. Tiffin again knotted the score on a jumper in the paint with 30 seconds left.

Tech held the ball for 20 seconds, then tried to run the same play to Staehlin. When TU defenders double-teamed Staehlin, Dernovsek freed herself on the arc for the game winner.

Tiffin (5-3, 1-2 GLIAC) went the length of the floor in the final 5.1 seconds, but couldn't get a shot off.

"Lucy was phenomenal," said head coach Kim Cameron. "She continuously hits big shots for us.

"We challenged Lisa at halftime, and she responded with a nearly perfect half to help us win the game. I'm so excited to get this win on the road."

Staehlin, who sat the bench with two fouls a majority of the first half, went 6-for-6 from the field in the second half. The 6-2 senior center also had a game-high nine rebounds to go with her 12 points in the contest.

Dernovsek poured in 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting including 4-of-5 accuracy from 3-point range. Fellow senior Angela Guisfredi had her best career game, posting 11 points all in the second half.

The three seniors combined for 42 of the team's 64 points.

Tiffin was able to take a lead into halftime with 50 percent shooting and tough defense. The Dragons forced 11 Tech turnovers and led by as many as nine in the opening 20 minutes.

The hosts would have taken a 33-26 margin into halftime except for a Dernovsek triple right at the buzzer that was counted.

Tech had the four-point intermission deficit erased just four minutes into the second half. The teams traded the lead five times before Staehlin and Dernovsek hit the big shots at the end.

The Black and Gold posted a 51-percent mark from the field while holding the Dragons to 42 percent for the contest. Hitting seven more 3-pointers (nine compared to two) also allowed the Huskies to overcome 16 turnovers.

Michigan Tech will return home for two games before the Christmas break. It hosts Ferris State Saturday (Dec. 18) before a battle against No. 9-ranked Grand Valley State Sunday (Dec. 19).
