FINDLAY, Ohio - Michigan Tech came up just short in
volleyball at Findlay today, losing to the Oilers 16-14 in the
deciding fifth set. The Huskies won the first and third sets, but
couldn't quite close out the fifth in falling to 5-20 overall and
3-15 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Tech won the first set after fending off a match
point with an Alicia Schneider kill then forcing back-to-back
attack errors for a 26-24 score. Findlay gradually built up a lead
in the second set en route to a 25-17 decision.
UF fought off three straight match points in the
third set before the Huskies prevailed 25-22 with a kill from Jena
Karkos. The Oilers won five straight points to put away the fourth
set 25-18 and send the match to a decisive fifth.
The ultimate set was tight the whole way with the
teams tied at 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14-all. A Huskies' attack error
and an Oiler service ace put the match away in Findlay's favor.
"We competed well and took some strides forward, but
our inexperience hurt us in the end," said head coach Orlando
Gonzalez. "I thought we played with a lot of heart tonight. It was
nice to get that feeling, and it paves the road to a better
future."
Junior outside hitter Kristine Sexton was selected as
the Superior Player of the Match after turning in a match-high 23
kills with a .378 hitting percentage. Schneider added 15 kills and
a .321 percentage.
Findlay utilized an 18-to-7 advantage in blocks.
Danielle Taflinger had six of those blocks to go with a team-high
22 kills for the Oilers.
Michigan Tech will close out its 2010 season tomorrow
with a 2 p.m. match at Hillsdale.
