Huskies' Defense Stellar in 67-46 Win over UMD

Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The No. 17-ranked Michigan Tech women's basketball team held Minnesota Duluth to 28 percent shooting and 46 total points in a 19-point win at the SDC Gym in front of 811 fans tonight. The Huskies opened the game on a 15-3 run and never looked back in improving to 2-0 this season.

"This was a great win for us as a team," said head coach Kim Cameron. "For the first time this season, we really clicked and felt comfortable playing our game.

"We attacked their defense well and did a couple of different things with our defense to slow them down. They both worked."

Lindsey Lindstrom buried two 3-pointers in the first 75 seconds of the game to set the tone on offense. In addition, the Black and Gold didn't allow UMD its first field goal until six minutes into the game. By that time, the hosts had built up a double-digit lead. Three straight 3-pointers from Lucy Dernovsek, Sam Hoyt and Paige Albi pushed the margin to 19 at the midway point of the frame.

The gap grew to as many as 21 before the Bulldogs fought back. UMD used a 10-2 run to get back within 13. The score was 36-23 at half.

The visitors kept the score close through the nine-minute mark of the second half as a three-point play closed the margin to 50-38. Tech responded with a 12-2 run as it forced four turnovers and four missed shots on eight of UMD's next nine possessions. Lindstrom's free throws at the 4:24 mark made the margin 63-40. The Huskies were able to empty the bench in the final three minutes before clinching the 67-46 victory.

Hoyt tallied a career-high 20 points in the game to go with six assists and four steals. Lindstrom added 19 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Lucy Dernovsek scored just three points, but was a major factor in the game with seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals.

Neither team shot the ball at a high percentage. Tech was 23-of-60 (38 percent) from the floor while UMD was 14-of-51 for its 28 percent.

Tech came away with a slim 39-36 rebounding advantage and went 11-of-12 at the foul line.

Michigan Tech will head to St. Paul, Minn., for its next games. The Huskies face Southwest Minnesota State on Friday (Nov. 26) at 2 p.m. before challenging host Concordia-St. Paul Saturday (Nov. 27) at 4 p.m.
