TIFFIN, Ohio - Michigan Tech overcame a slow start to defeat
Tiffin 89-63 today in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference women's basketball. Katie Zimmerman tied a
school record with six 3-pointers and Katie Wysocky added 21
points to help the Huskies move to 12-1 overall and 6-1 in the
league.
Tiffin shot 60 percent in the opening half, yet Tech led by eight
at the break. The Huskies trailed 29-24 with 6:31 remaining in the
frame before a 10-0 run put the visitors in control. Tech came up
with three steals during the run and Zimmerman knocked down three
3-pointers in the final five minutes of the stanza to help the
Black and Gold head into halftime with a 45-37 advantage.
Tech opened the second half by scoring the first seven points and
going on a 20-4 run in the first five minutes. The margin grew to
as many as 33 before the final horn.
"Our defense wasn't very sharp to start the game, and that allowed
them to make some early shots and get confidence," said head coach
John Barnes. "I thought our
offense was really good, and it's nice to see our bench give big
contributions again."
Zimmerman buried six 3-pointers in the game to tie a school record.
She was 6-of-9 from behind the arc. Wysocky posted her second
straight game with a near-triple double with 21 points, 11 rebounds
and six steals.
Danae Danen posted 16 points
in the game, with 14 of those in the second half. Lisa
Staehlin closed out a perfect week by going 4-of-4 from the
field for eight points (she was 5-of-5 on Thursday).
Tech shot 63 percent in the second half to finish the game at 59
percent. The Black and Gold also made 11-of-22 from long range and
committed just seven turnovers in the game.
Tiffin cooled off after halftime as it made 31 percent in the final
20 minutes and 44 percent for the game.
Michigan Tech will play its next two games at home. The Huskies
welcome Hillsdale to the SDC Gym Thursday (Jan. 14) and Findlay
Saturday (Jan. 16).
Notes: Zimmerman has hit six 3-pointers in a game three times. Six
other Huskies have done it once.
