SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The No. 5-ranked Michigan Tech women's
basketball team used a 14-0 run early in the second half to
overcome a 33-27 halftime deficit and defeat the home standing Lake
Superior State Lakers 72-67 today. The Huskies (16-1 overall, 11-1
GLIAC) made 54 percent of their second-half field goals to outscore
LSSU by 11 in the final 20 minutes.
Much like last year, LSSU (9-7, 6-6 GLIAC) came out with more
intensity. The Lakers shot 46 percent in the opening half and held
the Huskies to 37 percent en route to a 33-27 halftime
advantage.
Lake Superior State scored the first bucket of the second half for
an eight-point lead before Tech got going. Tara Ferris drained a
3-pointer to start a 14-0 run that left the score 41-35. The Lakers
answered with seven straight to regain the lead, but Ferris swished
another triple to put the Huskies back on top.
The teams battled into a 49-all tie with nine minutes to play.
Ferris hit her third trey of the half to break the deadlock and
added a free throw on the next possession. The Black and Gold never
trailed again.
Lake Superior State made it a two-point game with 3:30 to play
before another huge three provided a spark-this one from Katie
Zimmerman. Danae Danen added a layup on
a nice feed from Zimmerman for a seven-point margin and the Huskies
made enough free throws in the final minute to seal their sixth
straight victory.
"I thought we gutted it out and made plays down the stretch to get
the win," said head coach John Barnes. "It was an ugly
game, but this group has been in a lot of these contests and they
know how to get through it."
Katie Wysocky turned in her
second consecutive 20-point effort with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Zimmerman added 17 points. Stream scored 13 and had five assists.
Ferris posted 10 points-all in the second half.
Tech finished the game at 45 percent from the field and committed
just six turnovers against LSSU's full-court pressure. The Lakers
finished the game at 41 percent and held a 34-31 rebounding
edge.
Michigan Tech has 10 games left on its regular season schedule.
Their next contest will be at GLIAC North Division co-leader Grand
Valley State on Thursday (Jan. 28).
