HOUGHTON, Mich. - The No. 5-ranked Michigan Tech women's
basketball team defeated GLIAC South Division leader Findlay 82-70
today as senior Katie Zimmerman reached two
milestones. The 5-6 guard drained 7-of-10 from behind the arc to
set Tech's single-game 3-pointers made record and tallied her
1,000th career point in the process.
Zimmerman and senior Katie Wysocky combined for
45 of the team's 82 points to help the Huskies improve to 14-1
overall and 9-1 in league play. UF fell to 12-3 and 7-3,
respectively.
Tech used a 13-0 run to go from being down by two points to up
35-24 with 4:15 left in the half. Wysocky scored seven points
during the run and Zimmerman added six including her 1,000th point
on a 3-pointer at the 6:06 mark. UF answered with a 10-0 spurt
before Sarah Stream made two free
throws to send the hosts into halftime leading 37-34.
The Black and Gold put together a 9-0 run early in the second half
to push the margin back to double digits. The closest UF would come
in the final 10 minutes was 10 with a minute to play.
"We came out with intensity and desire today," said head coach John
Barnes. "We played very well defensively, and I'm very happy
for Zim (Zimmerman)."
Zimmerman tied a career high with 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting
from the field. Her seven treys surpassed the previous record of
six she shared with three others. Zimmerman also tied a career high
with six rebounds.
Wysocky posted 22 points and 11 rebounds for her 12th double-double
of the season. Danae Danen also scored in
twin figures with 11. She also set a record, becoming Tech's
all-time leader in blocked shots with three in the game.
Tech shot 44 percent from the field and 48 percent from 3-point
range. Findlay was 39 percent from the floor including 46 from
three. The Huskies held a 42-35 rebounding edge.
Michigan Tech will play its next four games on the road beginning
Thursday (Jan. 21) at Saginaw Valley State.
Notes: Tech now has four players on its roster with at least 1,000
career points in Wysocky (1,588), Stream (1,246), Danen (1,092) and
Zimmerman (1,014) … Danen has 151 career blocks. The
previous record was 148 by Carie Pejka (1988-92).
