HOUGHTON, Mich. - Sophomore Brett Olson scored a pair of
goals for Michigan Tech in a 6-2 WCHA loss to Alaska Anchorage
Friday (Jan. 15) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The
Seawolves improve to 7-13-1 overall and 5-11-1 in the WCHA, and
Tech falls to 3-19-1 overall and 2-15-0 in the league.
"I thought we played a great third period, but our first two
periods were just awful," said head coach Jamie Russell. "Our
defensemen just turned it over, turned it over, and turned it over
some more. Anchorage got their rushes because of this. We got our
act together in the third period. We came out and blocked some
shots, but we didn't win enough battles throughout the game."
The Seawolves scored two quick goals in the first period. Junior
Tommy Grant scored the first goal on the power play at 5:33, and
sophomore Jade Portwood followed up with his second goal of the
season 15 seconds later.
Olson closed the deficit to one goal heading into the first
intermission thanks to his break away short handed goal at 10:16.
The Superior, Wis., native also scored the team's previous short
handed goal in its 3-1 win over St. Cloud State on Oct. 30th.
The Seawolves added a pair of goals in the second period. Freshman
Mitch Bruijsten scored his first goal of the season at 4:40, and
junior Sean Wiles added a short handed goal for the Seawolves at
10:39.
Olson scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season after tapping
in a rebound on the power play at 5:17. Juniors Jordan
Baker and Eric Kattelus assisted on
the goal.
Anchorage closed the scoring with a pair of empty net goals at
18:30 and 19:35 respectively.
Freshman Kevin
Genoe (2-13-1) gave up four goals and made 29 saves for the
Huskies.
On the other end, senior Jon Olthuis (4-7-1) made 27 saves and
allowed two goals.
The two teams will close out the season series Saturday (Jan. 16)
at 5:07 p.m.
