ASHLAND, Ohio The No. 8-ranked Michigan Tech women's
basketball team had its perfect record in the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference snapped at Ashland today by a
80-77 score. Alicia Schneider's 3-pointer with four seconds
left in regulation sent the game into overtime, but the host Eagles
claimed the win.
The loss broke Tech's 10-game overall winning streak and its
15-game GLIAC winning streak.
"I didn't have us ready to play today, and we gave up some easy
baskets early," said head coach John
Barnes. "I think that carried through the whole game.
"We played hard for the final two minutes to get the game to
overtime, but again gave up easy layups in the overtime. We need to
learn how to execute our game plan for a full 40 minutes."
Tech (18-3, 15-1 GLIAC) trailed by six points with less than two
minutes to go in regulation before Katie
Zimmerman and Sarah Stream both made jumpshots and Katie
Wysocky sank a layup. AU made two free throws for a 3-point
lead with 17 second left before Scheider's 3-pointer tied the game
at :04. Tech defense held for the final second of the second half
to send the game to overtime.
Ashland (13-8, 9-7 GLIAC) opened the extra session by scoring six
straight points. The Huskies were forced to foul to get back into
contention and it worked. Zimmerman's putback layup with eight
seconds left cut the margin to two. AU then made 1-of-2 foul shots,
giving Stream a chance to send the game in to a second OT. Her
leaning 3-pointer at the buzzer did not go in.
Wysocky finished with 24 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four
steals in the contest. Zimmerman added 16 points, and Stream
tallied 14 more for the Huskies.
Tech held a 49-28 rebounding advantage in the game and made
20-of-22 free throws but committed 18 turnovers and shot just
5-of-21 (24 percent) from 3-point range.
Ashland shot 46 percent from the field and turned the ball over
just nine times in victory.
Michigan Tech will continue a four-game road trip on Thursday (Feb.
12) at Ferris State. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
